I remember my old mare (34) was really irritable and uncomfortable when given one but not the other, I used a certain one for about a year but one day I went into the feed place and they didn't have it, but had the other, I assumed they were the same, but I noticed the grumpiness first, then like mild colicky signs....stopped using it and switched back to the original one and she was fine.
One was No Bute and the other was Devils Claw Relief or something, sm going back a couple of years....Will have a dig around in the morning as I have the full bottle of whichever didn't agree with her stashed away somewhere.
Interestingly enough, Devils claw shouldn't be given to pregnant mares as it's a uterine stimulant, I wonder if this would cause some discomfort to non pregnant mares? Possibly like human period pains?
When ever i give my horses any kind of pain killers natural or from the Vets i give them Probiotic from Feedmark and i have never had any problem with Devils claw/Bute Free/Zero Butr/Bute Less
Gem lives on Devils claw from Holland and Barrett and has done for five years. It makes all the difference to her esp when the ground is hard. I have (touch wood) not had any other implications with it and would rather feed this then bute.
Thanks for that. Think she may have got some gastric ulceration from it, so have taken her off it. Won't eat haylage anymore (acidic?) but have managed to get a bale of nice hay and she's chomping that happily and eating hard food again. Weird cos other horse on same Devils Claw, with no problems at all
