1. Whats staghunting like?
2. What devon & somerset staghounds like? e.g friendly, any jumps, stand still alot?
Thanks :)

Dunno...but the huntsman Donald started off his hunt servant career here at the East Kent as kennel help/second whip/dogsbody...lucky chap was huntsman for the D@S very young, about 25 I think. He`d have had excellent schooling in the basics of kennel management from Richard Blakeney though!

Am i right in thinking they go like hell but no jumping?

There is no jumping..........i wouldnt say they go like hell, but i guess it varies from day to day.
Lots of up and down very steep hills,so a sure footed animal is benifical, but there again i guess you can stay on top of the hill, depending on where they meet.
That is all im commenting on,otherwise i may get in trouble!!! ;):D

Q Yes! Don't forget the bit about up and down steep coombes with no slackening of pace as well! You need a very fit and foot sure horse to stay with them and no matter how sunny it looks, always wear your thermals and something waterproof; there's nothing like Exmoor for throwing all different weather at you within an hour. There's no place like it though and a wonderful chance to get close up to watch deer. Hope you have fun, tell us all about it please.

It is fantastic country, not just hunting.......you will see plenty

Without meaning to sound rude - I already know! I love it down there, have been going for years, not just for the hunting either although I have some great shots of deer. We used to just go out and sit and watch; amazing what you see if you know where to look.

No,not being rude......I was just expressing my love of the country and being lucky enough to live here :D

Did you ever know Clem and Di Barton and daughter Jane from Withypool- been there years, both retired and Clem died eventually, big hunting people and dealt with Ronnie Wallaces horses for decades. Jane comes down at weekends to stag watch.

Have to agree, wonderful part of the country and once they've sussed you out they are all so friendly and welcoming. Never been on horseback but it is our annual 'family' holiday (inc child and 4 dogs)!!! Would love to move there one day!
