Can you have your dogs dew claw removed? my little hooch keeps licking it and when i look i cant see any redness or swelling but he,s very snatchy and uncomfortable im going to take him to the vet if he s still doing it 2morrow.....

we often remove them as 3 day old pups as they can cause problems as adults.

once adult, we can only remove them under GA and tend to only do so if there's a good medical reason for it.
 
We had our boys removed when he was gelded he was about 18 months at the time, he had cought his a few times. It had to have a stitch in it.
 
They are often removed as very young pups, but as they get older it becomes a pretty major op. If it is genuinely causing a problem that can't be lived with, then yes they can be removed.
 
Hiya,

My vet removed our Jack Russells dew claws when he was gelded about six months ago. He is three yrs old but the vet had noticed that they were rather large and loose so took them off.
Charlie had no prob's after the op' whatsoever so I guess its just one less thing to worry about now!
