dew claw, injury after fight

hope iv got the name right (just google searched it!)

my dog had a fight with my mums dogg the other day, and it seems as if this claw is now missing!

its red and shes licking it alot but shes not limping and is fine with me having a look at it.

but will it heal ok on its own?

It should heal up fine as long as its kept clean. I always had dew claws removed on my dogs that had them. Solved the problem of ever getting caught.

should i be cleaning it? if so whats best to use?

I used to use warm salt water. Then not to tightly cover and bandage up.

Bes ripped hers playing a while back. It was half hanging off at a 90 degree angle so took her to the vets and he pulled it right off. He said it should heal on it's on fine but she had antibiotics just to stop any infection. It's healing nicely and starting to grow back. He said just to make sure she didn't worry it too much - fine to keep it clean but not constant licking.

My lurcher has pulled out his dew claw about three times now when running around on walks

It has always been fine, he keeps it clean, but unfortunately it grows back eventually - until the next time!

That's why I think all dogs dew claws should be taken off (on the hinds atleast) unless they're specifically needed for working dogs (which I wouldn't know anything about).

We had a great dane who's dew claw got caught and it bled for britain!
