Dew claws

Have a question.

My 7 year old collie keeps ripping his few claws to the point were they are bleeding and the nail either comes off or we have to take it off.

My vet doesn't really want to do th op to remove then as it can be hard.
Does anyone have any advice?
 
I have had my bitches front dew claws removed as she did the same. They are a pain to heal but once they heal that's it. My vets are the same about front dew claws, not so worried about removing hinds. Also depends on how well attached they are, some just flap in the wind. We found post operatively bit using dressings but using buster collars helped the healing process xxx
 
I have to wrap it up in a plaster and vet wrap or it can bleed all over and he doesn't chew or try to get it off so he might be okay with dressings.
I thing I will have a word with the vet tomorrow.

My boy dog had them removed as an adult as he kept ripping them too. Vet was happy to do it but they were amputations as he had proper thumbs :-(
He healed well though and I'm glad he had it done.

Big collie Keeps looking sad very time we talk about having them off so I think he is against the idea:)
 
You can buy boots to protect the dew claws, kinda like horse boots. Although I read somewhere that they use their dew claws to help in turning- dogs that had them removed or wore boots were more likely to get arthritis and other joint problems, although if they're bleeding all the time I guess thats worse!
