Dewormers! My horse spit SOME out?!

hey there,

it's my first time owning a horse where i have to de worm myself so any help is greatly appreciated!

I dewormed my horse today with a dewormer but I didn't know she had grass in her mouth and she spit the grass out along with SOME dewormer!

I don't know how much she spat out cos i continued administering the paste after she spat it out! Her dosage is 450 and cos i saw that she spat some out, I gave her a little bit more (500-550?)

I don't know if I gave her too little cos she spat it out and i've no idea exactly how much she spat out cos it came out in a grass ball!

Please advice as I've been reading all the horrid things about worms that i'm a little paranoid now. Also, if I want to do the faecal worms count test, how long after should I wait before doing the test?

It's really important not to underworm your horse (as in not giving a full dose when you worm). It's one of the things that is causing the increase in resistance.

A lot of horses spit some out. Fingers crossed you've given her enough. There's not a lot you can do about it now.....

Our vet recommended a worm count 4 weeks after we wormed (one horse had a worm problem). But be aware that WC do not show tapeworm and ensysted red worm so you need to worm for these anyway (tapeworm spring and autumn and ERW in depths of winter)

Please be careful if there are any dogs around that any spat out wormer is cleaned up as it is poisonous to dogs.

Not much you can do about it now but to be honest, it sounds like she spat a fair amount out and I would have just given her the rest of the tube. It wouldn't hurt to overdose her by such a small amount but it will affect the effectiveness of the wormer to under-dose.

In future I'd make sure her mouth is empty when you administer the wormer and hold her head up by the chin until she swallows. OR alternatively mix it WELL into a feed - maybe using mint or garlic to disguise the taste.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I always use the whole tube on my horses, she is about 500kg and i give enough for a 650/700 depending on how big wormer is.

This takes into account for any coming out etc....

Asked my vet about this and to overdose a horse i'd have to give about 30 tubes of the stuff.

Hiya,

If your horse didnt get all of the wormer it may not have worked properly. if you want to know for definate you could get a worm egg count done. it will tell you how many worms are in your horse and can help you with a worm plan and advice on worming. I think the best worm counts are from P.E.T.S (i found them in google by typing derbyshire horse worm counts), theyre fast and really cheap too.

If you use equvalan, the worm egg count id free. most vets can also do them cheaply in house and can tell you straight away.

Interestingly, ivermectin is only poisonous to Collies and collie crosses and is safely used in other breeds. That has always fascinated me!

At least you managed to get some in!! I still have the "streak" on my stable ceiling where just as i plunged the wormer he moved and i ended up worming the ceiling!!!! Wasted a full wormer!!!!

I'm sorry, but to intentionally overdose a horse on a routine basis is most certainly not a good idea! Just because you can, does not mean you should.

Your vet is quite right about the amount you would have to give to cause any harm, but to overdose or underdose regularly will give rise to resistance eventually. It should only be used as a safety net, not for routine dosing.

As for the OP, you have no way of knowing how much your horse spat out and therefore I would worm again to be sure. Underdosing is the single most cause of anthelmintic resistance. There is only approximately a teaspoon of wormer in a standard syringe so to spit even a little out is actually a huge amount! Was it a Vet or a SQP that prescribed your wormer? as they should have warned you of the possibility that your horse may spit some out and what to do if that happens.

It is far better to overdose your horse than underdose. This is under the basis that you only worm about twice a year.

It's happened to us all at one time or another.
Next time worm her after she's been worked and before she has a chance to get any food. I put mine in a yard for 30mins before worming so they have no food in their mouths. They then get a few peppermints, then get wormed followed by a few more peppermints to take the taste away
