ok so i lost my 17hh tb before christmas, his rug size was 6'9" as noone i know has a horse that big i think i would like to donate all his rugs and saddle to World Horse Welfare. only thing is i have about 14/15 rugs and tbh all could do with cleaning. at £10 per rug this is expensive for me to do.

my question is...would they except rugs that havent been cleaned? they are all in good condition with only a few that have patches where they have been repaired. obviously i would like to be able to clean them first but unfortuantly i dont think i will be able to afford it.

i know i could sell them and make some money. but i like the idea of donating them. it makes it feel like some good has come out of a bad situation. He was my world and i like the idea of him helping others in need even if he has gone. (bit like donating to charities in your will i suppose)

I went down to my family for Christmas and took two of my old girl's rugs with me for the local horse sanctuary. One was a stable rug, 18 years old and a bit stained but good to go, the other was a lightish turnout, muddy and hairy but still waterproof. I explained to the owner the circumstances (death of horse), and condition of the rugs and was happy to say they had never been exposed to ringworm and Dermatophillus. The sanctuary was thrilled and delighted to have them. Even if they only get season out of them, it puts off a potential bill for a while longer.

I donated a load of rugs to Bransby and they were so grateful. I didn't have them cleaned.
It is one of the best things I have ever done and I still have a good feeling when I think of some neglected horse wearing one of them.

Good Luck

I've donated loads of rugs to HAPPA, I rang and asked if they needed to be cleaned, and they said no to bring them as they where :-)

The Charity Homes have probably got industrial washing machines to wash their rugs in so would be able to wash any donated ones. What a lovely and thoughtful idea to do with rugs that we no longer need.

thanks for the advise. i will be ringing them up today and hopefully take them down at the weekend if possible. i dont like seeing them in my tack room as it just upsets me so really hoping they can find good uses for them
