Ok, @ friends nine ye@r old Lh@so @pso h@s just been di@gnosed with di@betes. The initi@l consult@tion & blood test cost £130.00. The vet h@s @lso told them th@t the dog will need to be brought in one d@y @ week for monitoring & blood testing. The vets estim@ted this to cost £100 e@ch time. To me, this sounds ott. Would be gr@teful for @ny @dvice reg@rding the regimen & costs involved for @ di@betic dog. Cheers.

When Jura greyhound was ill she had about three or four lots of blood tests, and she never had to stay all day - the blood was taken, and I took her home? I seem to recall it was about £50-£60 a time, although that was back in 2008
 
I'll need to check through my pile of itemised bills for test costs, grr!
Is keeping her in to do with making sure she's had certain particular access (or no access!) to food and fluids, I wonder?
 
My parents old retriever was diagnosed with diabetes when she was about 11. I dont recall us taking her to the vets apart from if we felt she needed to go. We just injected her twice a day at meal times.

The vets h@ve s@id th@t until they c@n st@bilize him which could t@ke up to 6 months, worse c@se scen@rio would cost @ le@st £100 @ week!:eek: Not including speci@l diet, insulin & @nything else needed. @lso the vets @re ch@rging £23 couriering fee for the bloods to be t@ken to their other pr@ctice for testing which is @pprox 6 miles @w@y:mad:

I think they should get @nother quote from @ different vets.

It is normal for a diabetic dog to be hospitalised daily for glucose curves
It's very important to monitor closely, and to take bloods samples before injecting with insulin, in the initial stages bloods may need to be taken hourly, then feed needs to be measured and controlled, calculations need to be may re dosage and the animal monitored closely incase they need emergency care/treatment whilst the initial stabilising takes place.

The cost sounds about right and insulin is pretty expensive too.
Do the owners recieve benefits at all?
