Just curious as i've seen threads dotted about with horses showing symptoms that could be seen as this condition? Laminitis is one of the symptoms apparently, as is metabolic issues, such as skin problems and problems with cuts not healing very quickly..
Does anyone have a diabetic horse, and how do you manage their condition?

My late gelding had EMS (equine metabolic syndrome). It's similar to type 2 diabetes (not type 1!!). He was on medication for it, daily exercise & a strict diet, but managed fine once treatment began. x

I have a ems horse.

He is managed with metformin and diet and exercise to manage his weight and sugar intake

I also use clipping and rugging to get him to use his own body weight to keep warm.....sounds harsh but his metabolism needs to keep working so clipping him out and not rugging up to the ears (I'm not mean and make him shiver he is warm but not 'toasty' when rug is on but he builds his own heat)

That's how we manage it.

He got lami through grazing on snow in 2011 and when we told vet that he had always been chubby and hard to shift the pounds, he had done a 17mile sponsored ride a month before getting lami, vet suggested blood to text cushions and ems.
