our mini schnauzer has just been diagnosed with diabetes.
I’ve been for a chat with my vet and have been shown how to inject etc.
I’m just really struggling to get him to let me give him his insulin. Has anyone any tips?
Any other advice would be very welcome, feeling very overwhelmed atm!!😢

Where are you attempting to inject? And what is your method? I have some experience due to looking after a friend's dog.

My friends dog was diagnosed last year and it was a bit of a rollercoaster initially, but is being managed well and the dog is doing well. The dog is wearing a Libra monitor so friend is able to monitor levels very closely. The dog has also had a complete diet overhaul as well.

The dog is a Schnauzer cross.

Thankfully she's very tolerant of being injected.

I was advised around the neck area, near the collar.
Any diet tips would be great, as I’d like him to put on a bit of weight.
We caught the diabetes very early but I still think he looks a bit poor.
We are working with our vets but I’d love a bit of pet owner input!!

So presumably you're scruffing the neck for the injection, and that's possibly the trigger for the dog saying 'nope'. Try scruffing gently several times a day, so that it becomes a habitual form of interaction. What size needle are you using?

You may be able to increase the weight marginally, but a year after diagnosis my friends dog has stayed stable at the very lightest end of the scale for her breed (perhaps marginally less). Personally I'd focus on preventing more weight loss rather than trying to increase it per se.

What are you feeding?

Thank you!
We have the smallest needle available, as I’ve already queried that lol!
Will try your tips 🥰

If you are using the insulin syringe the needle should be tiny. If he’s eating well can you inject as he’s finishing his dinner but still eating?
Definitely pair scuffing with a treat in the right order - scruff then treat.
There are diabetic foods that help control glucose etc.

Tiny treat every time? We have to give our JRT eye drops twice a day for the rest of her life, she comes and asks us to do it after her meals because the gets a treat straight after.

Any time my dog needs an injection I take a few trays of wet food like Cesar, open them and put them on the floor and she's too busy burying her face in it to notice.
I also do this when she is very hungry/would not feed her first.

A diabetic dog has to be fed before giving insulin. It's also recommended to wait a short while after eating to give the injection.
