Hi everyone.

My aunts horse has been diagnosed with EMS. I hope thats right, (I have no experience of this.)

Her vet has her mare under control with medication etc but I was just wondering if many had heard of this or had a horse of their own with the 'illness.'

Its something that I have never come across.

Any info would be most helpful. :D

Equine metabolic syndrome is becoming diagnosed more commonly as vets accept that laminitis is a systemic illness and not automatically a result of feeding practices. We tragically lost a pony to it when we loaned her out. I feel the change of environment triggered it, as she had never had laminitis in the six years we had owned her.

Vets talk about insulin resistance where the levels of insulin in the blood are higher than normal as the body' normal blood sugar/insulin mechanisms start to fail.

I believe that obesity in early life is a predisposing factor.

Thank you horsemadmum1.

I believe that she was obese when she was brought and has had laminitis alot over the years.

Sorry to hear you lost your pony.

thanks for the info.
