Diagnose this....

Horse appears to have injured one eye. No visible signs of injury, no weeping, no heat, no redness; only sign is that he keeps it part closed, however at feeding time he is able to view the goings-on with 2 eyes wide open.

He has been like this for about 5 days. Suggestions, theories??

hmmm ... first thought was possibly uvitis but i would anticipate some sort of weepy discharge or slight discolouration.
amazing what food can cure, eh!

Corroy did exactly this, I was worried, then when dinner appeared she opened it!! I bathed it in a teabag and it cleared up. I thought it was abit extreme to get out of being ridden.
 
I love how everyone says uveitus - it is like saying I have a headache and someone being like IT MUST BE AN ANEURYSM.
 
Merlin had similar last nov.... only difference in eyes was that he kept gently winking at me!!!

Spoke to vet and she said if he is winking he is in pain (i thought, 'oh yes and a nice bill to boot') but took him to see her anyway.... but on the way back from an indoor hunter trial where he jumped and came 2nd and 4th in the two classes!!!

Anyway she could find nothing and we thought the worse and the nast U word was mentioned.... just as I reloaded him into the trailer he caught sight of another horse ane opened eyes up fully and there it was............................................................ the tiniest little corneal ulcer in the world, just a little speck of flourescent dye in the lower quarter of his eye.

Just goes to show that you should not dismiss winking like i did... he cant have been in agony or he wouldnt have jumped, but it could have got so much worse if i hadnt noticed!!!

Anyway two tubes of Fucithalmic later and he was all better!!
 
Either Uveitis or Iritis.

(NB Tia-Often seen when there has been inflammation or swelling somewhere else in the body).

Steroid eyedrops usually help but it can recur months later.

Friend has it at the moment.
 
I have no idea exactly what it is, but the spotty pony we had as a companion developed uveitis as a result of his gungey eye being ignored (not by us, I hasten to add). It may be worth getting it looked at, or at least bathing it regularly. Do keep an eye on it though *groan*.
 
Tia, we know you are sensible with your horses but just be careful with this...eyes are delicate things and cannot be ignored for long.
Some time ago my cat was doing a similar thing, she was fine in herself and eating but kept her eye partly closed. I kept bathing it in salt water and after a week it was no better but she was still fine in herself. Took her to the vets and she had an ulcer on it...but it was so advanced that despite weeks of treatment and injections we had to take her to have her eye removed in the end. It was heart breaking and to this day I feel guilty that I left it too long to go to the vets.
It could be something of nothing like some grit in it but even so, be careful...
 
Funny you should say this as that was my diagnosis too. Horse in question is fed from large round bales in feeders - he tends to stuff his head right into the middle of the bale completely smothering his head. I felt that he may have had a piece of leaf or seed in his eye but could not see anything when I gave him the third degree investigation.

Anyway their bales are being munched up now and are low on the ground with no depth to them - we also had a frost last night so perhaps made his eye run and flushed out whatever was in.....who knows; but this morning the eye is wide open; still no swelling, redness or weeping; so this is all I can put it down to.

Obviously I'll continue to keep a close "eye" on it and should it recur then vetty will be contacted. It isn't like this horse (Spotty Horse) to be off-colour.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions and help. Will bide my time for the moment.
 
I would say maybe something in it.

When my horse has been like this i have flushed it with human golden eye gel and it worked a treat. Not sure if you can get it out there though?
 
I bought an eye flush a couple of days ago - it has some gentian violet in it so he has looked like a panda for a couple of days and he does NOT like it......I actually think it makes him look even more like an Indian horse now!
 
Hopefully that should do some good then, just waiting for the eye to repair now. I wouldnt worry too much! Usually half closed eye leads to bottom lid swelling and then watering and then red and sore but looks like you have caught it early!
 
marsden came in last week like this, slightly puffy, I figured titch had been giving him a beating, it cleared up the next day, I think he bashed it....no other symptoms and all fine now..
