Hi guys

My boy has always had quite loose droppings but recently this has got worse. He has been moved to a new field with better grazing but this hasn't made him any better/worse.

Is there anything i can feed him to help bind his droppings? He is already on pink powder with no success.

He is fine in himself and fitter than he has ever been it's just that his poos are a bit messy!

Any advice greatly appreciated!

It could be worms, but you sound like someone who worms regularly! Might be worth getting a worm count done though, just to be sure.

Or it could be that his food is a bit rich for him. I had a horse once that would scour on haylage, so I had him on hay, and he was better.

He might be better on a high fibre diet, nuts instead of mix, and something like Dengie Hi Fi rather than Alfalfa chaff. And lots of oil can also make them a bit loose!

Traditionally, dry bran was used to 'bind' horses who were prone to loose droppings, but bran is out of favour now.

How long has it been going on? Could it be a bit of a bug? What about trying a natural yoghurt in his feed, which can help balance the bacteria in the gut and get the digestive system working better.

yup he's wormed regularly.

His fed is hi fi lite, speedy beet, oil and garlic
He has H+P nuts in his snak-a-ball only and is fed on soaked hay.

Don't think the bio yoghurt will work as it does the same thing as pink powder which has failed.

I am at a bit of a loss with him, I did think of dry bran but people seem against that option

Been like it since i got him, so three years. It's not majorly bad just not nice to pick up.

Bio yoghurt does the same as the pink powder he has been on and has unfortunately not worked

I have had my mare for 6yrs and for most of that her dropping have ranged from loose to liquid. Vet rule out any medical problems etc... and through the process of elimination a grass and sugar intolerance was proved. However even on a diet of hay, chaff, pink powder and limited turnout, her droppings were still loose. I have had her on Aloe Vera Gel for the last 3 months or so and her droppings are now normal (expect when we go out in the lorry as that is way too exciting). Might be worth trying with yours once worms etc ruled out.

Hmmmm he does have a sugar intolerance but i already knew about that hence his low sugar diet.

Could always try the aloe vera thought, thanks.

I have had great success using arrowroot powder. You can get it from the health food shops around 30p a small bag. Put a teaspoon or two in feed.

brewers yeast is good or if really bad go for global herbs diarreaze works excellent

I would get the vet to do a blood test. I had a pony who I'd known for years and she was always loose. My vet didn't think much of it, but when I put her out on loan their vet gave her a blood test and said she had red worm and thought she had had them for years. Worth investigating.
