Hi all,
My yearling (will be 2 this year) cob gelding recently saw the dentist for the first time and she discovered several diastema’s between his premolars on his lower jaw. Naturally I came home slightly panicked and googled what I could about diastema’s although pretty much all the info I found was regarding horses in their teens and older, and nothing about young horses.
Please tell me that all will be in proportion once he gets his adult teeth? :’)
Has anyone else had any experience with diastema in young horses, any advice?
Thank you!

I would want a proper full mouth examination by a specialist equine vet. If there are issues with his teeth now then you could save yourself a huge amount of money and heart break in the future by getting it sorted asap.

Diastema’s are just spaces between teeth and if young they may close a little as the jaw grows or remain. My dentist would suggest no chaff in feed and regular flushing out with water to clear. The dentist can widen them to stop food sticking but I wouldn’t panic.

All those teeth are going to be replaced with much bigger ones. Unless your dentist said there is anything which should be done, I wouldn't worry about it until the adult ones start to come through. Then I'd get regular checks to make sure nothing is blocking the adult ones from coming in straight.
.

I would leave well alone until the horse has all her adult teeth. I once met a beautiful big young horse who was in hospital because an equine dentist had over rasped his gaps leading to the horse being unable to eat.
