Did anyone get along to the hay auction at Northants and Oxford this weekend? Friends went with the hope of buying as much hay as they could for them, us and a number of other friends.

They said the price at Northants for a small bale - went for £12 a bale - so they went on to Oxford where it went for £14 a bale. They said it was the power stations buying it all.

I thought they only bought straw but apparently because they can't get that, they've turned to buying all the hay up - hence why the price of hay has risen dramatically because the power stations can afford to out-bid all us horse owners.

Does anyone know of any other auctions for hay coming up? We will be desperate in a couple of weeks time. I've got two phone numbers to ring about hay - and a friend has given me a contact - but apparently it's £8 a bale and it's loads of nettles, thistles, dock leaves, etc. Hardly the stuff I want to feed mares, foals and youngstock.

i dont know what qualilty it is but ive got a contact number for some over this way, apparently they have quite a bit too.

Well you'd better email me it over then please. I've got two phone numbers to call (one in Newmarket and one in Downham Market. The Newmarket is top quality (and i've already had 500 bales from him) but have to go see what the Downham Market stuff is like.

Not forgotten about the rugs - just haven't had a chance. This weekend was just another disaster!

We've made the decision to retire from showing totally, so horsebox up for sale yesterday, both youngsters going up for sale, Arnie to go out on loan, so it will just be the other hundred of horses here (ha ha), and all the show stuff - from show jackets, hats, show canes, show bridles, etc - all up for sale too.

Did you move the ponies at the weekend - all okay?

text you his number.
no rurry with rugs as now the nicer weather is coming he is naked a lot more but as he is a wimp i want to be ready for next winter.
shme you are giving up showing, what happened this weekend?
will let you know when the next sale is on & book a table ready.

yes boys moved on sunday, was rather eventful to say the least. the Shettie came on his own first with the only issue being refusing to load on the road with cars wizzing past, got to yard with him to discover the brakes had seized on trailer so had to source a new trailer to move SWA & flash cob, got them to load eventually & then discovered that the car & trailer were stuck in mud (drove into field as Flash cob is only a yearling & wasnt hapy loading him on side of road) so had to unload & push car & trailer out seperatly & park across the road with trailer ramp into gate to reload them.
got to yard ok though & the boys were last seen rolling in nice new grass.

it was a 20 min drive each way with them but took us 5 hours to move them.

shame you havent still got little lady Callie i can think of a good home for her :)

they burn straw to make power, with the lack of straw they are burning hay instead (& in some cases recycled paper products)

Well put Aoibhin - totally correct. Downham Market hay no good - they took 500 bales to St Ives auction, found out how much they can get, and have upped the price by pounds and pounds!

The number you gave me, I can't get hold of and I think they will probably charge a fortune for delivery over to me, BUT I've found a farm locally who has haylage at a very good price. So he's going to deliver me two big bales (two different grades) and we will decide what horse likes what grade. He has a load, so if you want the number I'll let you have it, but then you will have the same problem of delivery charge over to you.

Just been and picked up car - so am now mobile - hooray!

brilliant on the car news & haylage, i will get some from the bloke here & see what its like. i avoid haylage with his nibbs as it normally sends him loopy & makes his stable a nightmare to muck out (runny bum)

typical though isnt it find good hay then the price gets wapped up.

After all the panic, here in the North East there just hasn't been a hay shortage. Its £3 to £3.50 a bale for small bales and £25 for big bales. I did get ripped off at £5 a bale for 4 bales, but we were under 2 foot of snow and the supplier was 1/4mile down the road. He also upped his prices from £3 a bale as I only had £20 and I dont think he had nay change :( A lot of people still seem to have an awful lot left as well.

Could you not hire a lorry and drive out of the area to pick some up?

Those prices are unbelievable, hope not everyone cottons on to the fact that power stations will pay so much. Saw on another site tonight that someone with hay to sell is taking sealed bids! Hope this year proves to be a bumper year for hay so this doesn't happen again.

Wont be cheap with fert at over £300 ton fuel prices up and cost of machinery plus cost of land/grass with corn prices at £200 ton feed is never going be low again, so budget well
