Strange question I know...

Background: 17yo pony diagnosed last summer with Bone Spavin, had steroid injection but needed another injection 9 weeks ago, he responded well to it, vet v pleased.

Being bought back in to work, had first flatwork lesson in months last week and instructor said he looked lots better.

Went for a long hack on Sunday, fair amount of trotting/cantering, going okay but on way back, he suddenly started dipping his hock in trot (couldn't see anything in walk), worse than he has ever been in a straight line

Got off and checked him all over, nothing in his foot, no heat etc. Walked him gently back to the trailer, by the time we got there he was resting it leg and didn't like me touching his hock.

Got home, turned him out and he looked more comfortable, got down to have a roll okay etc. Didn't give him a bute as thinking I might need vet out next day.

However, next day he seemed a lot better and I trotted him up (in front of experienced friends) - you could see (like always) a very slight dip if you looked very hard but nothing like the previous day. Day after that I gently hacked in walk for 20 mins (thinking he will get stiff if not moving) and he felt normal and wanted to trot on a strip on grass where we normally do, so I let him for a few strides and he felt okay again. Hacked him again this morning and seemed normal.

The weird thing is that right just before he was lame in trot he had a pee... I took my weight off his back but after he had finished he seemed reluctant to move out of his 'peeing stance'. Don't think it was a napping thing either.

Could he have done something as he was having a pee - does the thing that they do with their hind legs i.e standing on their toes put extra strain on their legs?

Also noticed that he keeps that foot flat now when having a pee...

Or have I just done too much, too soon with him

I'm obviously taking it easy with him atm but fingers crossed he seems okay - tried to call my vet a couple of times to see what he thinks but can't get hold of him, will keep trying. Will probably have a lesson next week if he still feels okay and see what he like on a proper surface/circle.

Thanks for any thoughts/advice

It's quite possible that putting his hock in that unusual position was enough to give him a flare up of the arthritis. You can see this in arthritic dogs sometimes, they will be going along just fine then do one small awkward movement and be crippled for a few days! Sounds like he is improving.

My friend's horse had a wee on concrete, his back leg slipped and he put his back out - took weeks of physio to get it right again, so yes it's possible that he did something.

My friends horse had a bone spavin in one of his hocks years ago it has fused and he has been fine for ages. However about six months ago he was getting very angrey/annoyed when he was trying to pee we thought he had a urine infection tthe vet took samples which came back fine. Turns out that his other hock had started to go, he must have been incomfortable when he was going into pee stance. So there must be some connection.

Thanks for replies - so glad I posted this, it's not me going mad then, there could be a connection and I'm not grasping at straws

I might try and see if I can get off him quick enough next time he wants to pee while I'm riding (he does it quite often) to make it easier for him - will try not to get splashed

Chum does have a rather large 'you know what', often commented on by vet - perhaps he has to spread his legs further than normal?
