Didn't I rug that horse up last night? Another horsey brain f@rt moment.

Oops.

I opened the bedroom curtains this morning to see that the senior mare was already standing by the gate waiting for breakfast. Nothing unusual about that, except that I could have sworn that I put her turnout rug back on last night after she'd been nekked during the day.

Hmm.

Yup, I had put the rug back on, but I hadn't fastened the front buckles up .

She must have neatly disrobed during the night. The rug is fully intact, with just one belly strap undone, and no evidence of careering around. This is how I found it. Rambo turnouts have three layers of front fastenings, but they only work if at least one of them is done up...

And then later this morning.

'Mum, are you sure that you've put my rug on properly this time?'

I do train all my neds to cope with the unexpected, and not always intentionally . Bless her, she's been here for 18 years, and knows that I don't mean any harm.

No alcohol was involved, either.

I did that with the Little Dragon's turnout rug last winter. I'm pretty sure I did the velcro at the front but forgot the metal fasteners. Naked Dragon and a neatly laid out turnout rug with belly straps still done up in the field in the morning. It wasn't long after she arrived and I think she was wondering what kind of riff-raff circus she'd been sent to live in. ?

I have 5 to rug some days, so it’s easily done ?.

A couple of weeks ago I needed to change the old girls rug. She was eating hay at the shelter at the time and the ground a bit muddy. My cob was there too so I placed the rug I’d taken off screwed up on his back to keep it clean while I did the other one and promptly forgot it was there. I have visions of him suddenly wondering what was moving on top of him when he walked! Anyway i found it caked in mud in the middle of the field in the morning, so I won’t be doing that again.

I owned a horse for 20 years who was always very polite with his rugs, never damaged them and never took them off. One day I went up to find him naked and the rug in a pile in the middle of the field, with all the straps done up. I never worked out how on earth he did it, although he did roll and buck very energetically when turned out, but I'm still stumped!

I'm forever chasing one of the horses down the field after turning them out because I notice a second too late that I haven't done their surcingles up.

I've seen mine take her rug off. Wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes! The fillet string must have got blown up so it was on top of her tail, and she very deliberately took the front of the rug in her teeth and pulled until it was over her head. Then a quick shiver and a drop of the head, and it was on the floor.

She has rugs with leg straps now.

You may have solved my mystery, that sounds like how mine must have removed his fully done-up rug (it didn't have leg straps, and he would have been sensible enough to step out of the surcingles) :)

That is so weird. I did exactly the same thing yesterday. Never done it before and no idea why I did it this time. I too was very confused by a naked pony!

a tad warm maybe..........needing to remove a layer?
removed it for daylight hours will put a lighter one on at the weekend we are forecast hail showers and a temperature drop tomorrow will likely shed all the rugs once night time temps are in double figures and try to use the weather forecast in case of wind and rain. The two young ones are already naked and have been most of the winter the above pony is fully clipped so not up to cold and Hazel is a long time wuss and realy feels the cold inspite of her polar bear winter coat

We kept finding Archie naked and couldn't work out what was going on, until one of the girls found his best mate, Des, undressing him. He'd pull at the fillet string until his tail came out and would then go to the front and pull the whole thing over his head from the neck cover. Arch would oblige and step out of the surcingles. Des would then groom him all over before Arch joined in. Des didn't wear a neck cover and he was obviously desperate for Arch to groom him but Arch wouldn't as he was getting nothing in return so Des arranged it so he could show Arch exactly what he wanted. When Des moved to another yard locally we used to hack to visit him and within 10 seconds of seeing each other they'd be grooming each other.

We once found our old mare standing stock still in the middle of the herd with her rug over her head (filet string not secured properly). It was a windy day. She was so sensible she just stood there until someone rescued her. One of theTBs used to undress himself and we never actually saw him do - just found the rug fully done up in the field more than once. Maybe one of the others helped him but we will never know.

The other day I left my horse on the yard eating his dinner with a rug just chucked over his back, went to turn ponies out while he ate. Came back. He’s still standing eating dinner, no rug. Nowhere. Super super confused ?
Found it the next day, I’d left a field gate open, he’d obviously left his dinner, popped out had a roll and returned to the same position as I left him! (Minus the rug which was still in the middle of the field!)
Honestly thought I was going a bit mad

Thanks, all. So many seem to have had something similar happen. She's never shown signs of fiddling with her rug before, and neither have the others, so I can only blame my own incompetence for this.

There's something in the air, maybe? I had the AZ jab 3 weeks ago, should I log it as a side effect :D?

You irriot ??

TFF wanders off laughing, having done exactly the same last autumn.....
I seem to be joining a select club :D.

My tiny taliban likes to get naked at any opportunity. As he's growing he's been in rugs a little on the big side on occasion so he can easily riggle out of it. Just something else to keep the neighbours entertained. He's such a character.

I had a h/w cob that managed to get out of a rug with all the buckles still done up too. Rug was completely fine, no idea how he managed it.
