Diesel siphoning - anyone else having their diesel robbed?

Hi

I moved to a new farm 2 months ago in Saddleworth. About a month ago, I was about to drive off in the lorry and saw that the lid had been smashed off the tank and the diesel gone. I lost £50 quid of diesel, had to refill and had to buy a new cap for £30! I was about to set off to a show yesterday and when I started the lorry, it was on empty. Someone had drained half a tank of fuel. I was gutted as had to drive my car to fill up a container and it cost me a fortune to put enough in to go to my show plus I was stressing at being late!

There is no-where else I can keep it but I can't afford to keep filling up my diesel. Has this been happening to anyone else? Does anyone know if there are any devices you can get to stop them taking it? I will be trying to leave as little in as possible from now on but it's difficult as I don't like driving around in the red!

Cheers

Lisa

I happened to me a couple of times, in the end I put an additional security light (movement sensitive) near the lorry and made sure I always parked it within the arc and it never happened again. I did enquire about anti syphon devices (like they fit in cars) but was advised it was not possible to fit to the lorry I had at the time (Iveco)

Hi

I think my other option is just to park it against a high stone wall near the farm so they can't get to tank! Glad you told me that as mine is Iveco too.

cheers

If it was me id be tempted to booby trap the tank cap. How bout cctv? Its not that expensive nowadays. If you park next to a wall check that they havent burst the tank to get it out before you drive off.

swines! thats not funny, and I bet it will start happening more with the price of fuel. Parking against a wall sounds like a plan. I once heard of someone electrifying their vehicle... don't think its legal though!!!

There was a spate of this a good few years ago, even vehicles parked in town were targeted. If they couldnt get to the fuel cap the b*stards would get underneath the engine and cut the fuel lines instead.

Hmm, like the electrifying the vehicle deterrant - someone at horsecamp did that by accident, reversed the box up to the electric fencing, accidently touching it and electrifying the vehicle!

You can get a device (like a mesh frame) that is fitted in the neck of the tank, to stop any scumbag from dropping a pipe in. Tbh we had this happen a lot when we had a wagon, we used it almost daily so it was always left with a decent amount of fuel in. The only truly fail safe way is to leave it as near as damn emptyish and bring a can with enough to get to you to a petrol station when you want to go out.
A pain in the arse but unfortunately the low life scum couldnt care how inconvenient it is!

It's happening where I live too and they're stealing your heating oil!!! I say they, we all know who it is but even the police don't waste their time pulling them in anymore so they can basically just get away with it. Parent's send the kids out to do it and we know nothing happens there.

One of the kids was pulled for stealing a quad bike not so long ago. Police said to him we know it was you, we saw your face on CCTV (or words to that effect) - kid's answer was "you couldn't have seen my face - I was wearing a balaclava" - need I say more.

I'm sure there are devices out there but TBH if they want it badly enough they will get it.

I'm hoping my dogs get em if they try it here!! (Joke - I know the implications).

Not the diesel from a tank but my sister and OH have moved into a new house and their home heating oil has been nicked several times

They are fitting cameras and lights now.

Friend of ours have £2500 diesel stolen from his artics the other week - they previously had locking tank caps thinking it would stop them - no - they drilled through the lorry tanks and drained that way so not only did they have to buy diesel again, they also had to buy a new tank for each truck
