My very old (at least 17, she was a rescued adult in mid 1997) JRT is sadly slowing down and losing weight. I would like to try and find her a food that suits her, I know at that age low protein and fat is what is needed to avoid overloading her liver and kidneys. What can I give her that will help her weight but not compromise her system? I do realise it will be short term, she can't go on forever and she is getting more and more wobbly - but can demonstrate a fair turn of speed around the garden, even now, so I would love to help her if I can.
Thanks for any suggestions - a friend suggested porridge?

tinned chappie or a formulated diet for older dogs, my oldy (15yr) has been on chappie a year as it is low fat and low protein and he does really well on it, the formulated foods are possibly a bit faddy for my liking.

porridge is just not a balanced diet that offers her anything she needs

Sorry, should have said - porridge as well as her regular meals, as a way of gaining a little weight, not instead of lol. Thanks for the suggestion about Chappie

Another vote for tinned chappie. Our lab x thrived and lived to be 17. Our jrtx has been on it a year, and put weight on as it has always been a struggle to keep weight on her. In addition she's been calmer

Thanks to everyone - I found a source of frozen minced chicken, so bought some of that as well as some Chappie and also some porridge oats, She deserves a little spoiling at her age and so will be getting a choice from an a la carte menu!!
