Hi all,

My pony had mild laminitis at the start of July; on vet's instructions, he was box-rested, taken off hard feed, given soaked hay and limited turnout. Mid-July vet said he could come back into work / turnout, farrier confirmed hooves were fine, so that's what we have done. However, he feels as if he has no energy  and after about 20 or 30 minutes of walking, he feels knackered. Can I reintroduce a little hard feed, if so, what? Or should I be using oil instead...

Thanks for reading and Japanese rice crackers for posting sensible responses :D

Linseed is a good start, you can mix in with a small amount of Fast fibre, also I would be feeding Magnesium very good for the feet especially Laminitics.

Mine doesn't have much energy atm, but I put that down to the humidity and not being that fit!

Japanese rice crackers sounds yum :)

Micronised linseed.

Do you feed a general purpose vit and min supplement? He may be lacking in something if you've cut his feed out.

Are you sure he has been box rested sufficiently? 2 weeks of box rest sounds very little. Have you had the pony x rayed to assess the damage (if any) ?
I was unfortunate to have a pony who suffered a bout of laminitis following injury. The vet insisted on a minimum of four weeks box rest after the pony was off all medication.
Even a "mild" bout of laminitis takes time to repair.

Hi, how did the xrays go ? I'm going through laminitis with my mare at the moment , currently has on the imprint shoes , 2 weeks left with those then more x rays. Not sure what comes after that which is how come i found your post ! :)

Hi there! After x-rays and nerve blocks and whatnot, vet concluded that it's a hoof balance problem which farrier is correcting gradually - no pedal bone rotation, though :o

Even so, he has been on box rest for a while just to be on the safe side and he has now started going out in an outdoor pen. We walk in straight lines on sandy tracks

I've added Farriers Formula to his feed try and encourage hoof growth so that the farrier can get on with corrective trimming... Will let you know how it goes! Delly&Zo, hope your mare is on the right track soon x
