I was driving down a tiny road this evening to my friend's yard to drop something off for her.

I was looking at the (never grazed or fertilized) hedgerows, verges and the areas on the bridlepath nearby - all bursting with different plants, grasses, herbs and flowers....

Then I looked out over at the livery fields - uniform in their grass, clover and buttercups.

Comparing the two - is it any surprise that horses aren't always so healthy, despite the best care we give them?

I am so lucky my fields are surrounded by hedges and the horses always have access to them to browse which they spend plenty of time doing, especially at this time of year.

Another lucky one here:) My horses have this....

We are however, slightly lacking in cow parsley in this area, the flowers of which are a delicacy and (according to my horse) an essential part of his diet at this time of the year. I wish I had more knowledge on what a horse needs, when it needs it and why it needs it !
