What is the difference between a dark bay and a brown horse (if any)?

According to my mare's passport she is brown. I generally refer to her as being dark bay. She is dark brown in colour with black legs. She has a tan muzzle and lower belly. Her mane and tail are black.

My mare is brown....she often looks dark bay but when you look at her mane and tail it is darker brown...not black...this is the difference.

In the summer my mare will sometimes get 'highlights' in her mane and looks more like a liver chesnut.

I would class a brown horse to be bay with a brown mane and tail, however one of my black geldings is classed as brown due to his brown flecks in his coat not making him not a true black...

As far as i understand abay horse has a black mane, tail, legs, ear tips and muzzle, a brown horse does not. I have one who has mainly black in all those points but has a brown muzzle and is classed as brown. He also has some brown in his mane and tail.

My cob is bay with black mane and tail, but has a pink muzzle so is classed as brown, always thought it came down to colour of muzzle. Is chocolate brown on passport.
