Difference between horseware Mio and Hero Rugs?

The Mio is two tone in colour because the lower section is not breathable. Therefore it is a cheaper fabric, hence the lower price.

The Hero is fully breathable.

Amigo rugs do come up a bit small, so consider getting the next size up.

I do think that Amigos aren't as good as they used to be. The 1200d version was originally the budget Horseware rug. Then they bought out the 600d new budget HW rug, now you have the not fully breathable new new budget HW rug. The 1200d Amigos are so expensive now and the quality is not as good as my old grey and lemon one.

Sorry rant over.

ETA. My old Amigo (sadly ripped by my naughty grey when she wasn't even wearing it *sobs*) but it shows how they come up small. This is a 6ft rug on a horse that always needs 6ft in other makes, but it's a bit short on her.

The only difference I noticed when looking at them is that the Hero ones are the previously cheaper ones. They have brought in the Mio ones and pushed the price of the others up and the Mio fabric is not very tough. A bit like the fly rugs. The Mio fly rug is a bit cheap and nasty. I have the Amigo Bug rug which originally cost me £36.99 about 2 yrs ago. They have pushed the price of these now up to around £56 and the Mio has taken the place of the Bug rug.

I have the original red Amigo Lite turnout (now the Hero) and its still going strong. Its a shame they have messed around with the range, there was nothing wrong with it as it was.

How old is your red one? Is it 1200d or 600d?

The grey one above is 1200d and I bought it for £40 in 2006. That was full price too. The same rug (with cheap binding and thinner webbing for the surcingles) is approx £80 now.

Thank you for this thread!! I was looking at Amigos this morning, as I have always bought them in the past, the medium weights, and found them to be brilliant turnouts...but the new range names were confusing me. It is disappointing to hear they have not only messed with the names and ranges but also the quality is not as good.

Why change something if it isn't broke!

It's annoyed me too as the Horseware cut fits my horses so well. I've now bought a couple of Shires Typhoons (LW and 300g) for the chestnut mare above as there are some bargains about and they are really nice rugs.

ETA. I believe the 1200d Amigo is now called the Bravo.

My red one must be about 3 maybe more years old. It was £26.99 and when I got it there seemed to be lots of horses suddenly wearing them. At the time it was either red or a blue. I have washed and re-proofed every year (I do this for a job so a good perk) and it has stood up to all sorts of rain showers, heavy or light! Been a very good rug, its a shame they have bumped up the price so much now. Its the 600denier one by the way..

I've got an old Amigo lightweight which I've had for years and is a 600D I think, and recently bought 2 Amigo Bravo's and am quite pleased with them and the fit of them, quite high around the neck and shoulders and pretty true to size. I'm debating whether to buy another one for my gelding, as I am kitting everyone out with Horseware rugs this year.

I got my original Amigo turnout for about 15 Euros from the Horseware shop in Dublin about 6 years ago :D Been repaired quite a few times now.

Managed to get both of my Bravo's for under £60 each as well, so can't complain for that price.

Totally agree, but it's not just the Amigos, the Rambos seem not as robust as they were originally. I bought a Duo last year, the first Rambo I have purchased for 12 years and was most disappointed. The outer fabric feels thinner, the nylon lining is thinner and I'm sure it won't last as long as they used to. Rambos used to have a certain smell about them and that's gone now :( The sizing used to be generous and the cut deep, the 6' I bought 12 years ago swamped my 15.1, the 6' Duo I have now is only just big enough for my 14.2!

Such a shame, they made a fantastic product that was one of the very best ever, and since then all they have done is find ways to make it cheaper whilst putting the price up  The one consolation with the Duo was I bought it in a sale, if I'd paid full price I'd have sent it back!

Sorry, rant over

That's a real shame. My friend's Rambo Wug (purple with green binding) made it to 14 years before a rug ripper destroyed it (not my grey this time).

Yep, the one I bought 12 years ago and sold was the the same and still being worn by someone else's horse :( Wish I'd kept it 'cause it would have fitted my current boy.

Like you, I bought a total of four Amigos from 2004 (couldn't afford Rambos) and was really pleased with them for the price. I still have three of them and they are still used now and again as spares. I didn't buy any more when a change of horse meant a jump up in rug size 'cause the price had just about doubled, so I bought a PE. A down size in horse meant a change of rug size again and I really thought I was treating my boy with a Rambo. Won't be buying any more, when I need a new rug again it will be a PE.

Which PE did you buy? I had a ballistic nylon one (I have found that nylon rugs ar the best for long term waterproof-ness, whereas I've found polyester rugs seem to lose their waterproofness after washing) and it was excllent. PE did do polyester rugs a year or two ago, but they dropped them, so either they didn't sell or they had lots of complaints about them. Now they just have nylon and ballistic nylon in turnout rugs.

I agree that Nylon is the best. :)

It was a couple of years ago that I bought it (new). It was the LW turnout (Buster?) but I can't remember what it was made from.

I bought the entire amigo collection when they first came out- both weights of TO, a cooler and a sheet all in navy and I've still got the l/w! Must be around 7 years old from Arena Leisure. the Mio is coming out in such a jazzy new colour you should see what they have in the states!

The mio is a real mini skirt fit I think, no where near as deep cut as the amigo/heros or whatever they're called now! I agree, horsewear rugs are down on quality and up on price. Saying that though, a girl at the yard got some rhinos last year and they still have the really tough outer on them and don't seem to have been altered at all. I think if I was going to get a horsewear rug I'd be going for one from the rhino range. I had a duo and wasn't that impressed by it for the money. I also think the one that looks like 2 rugs stitched together that's more expensive than the duo looks weird, why not make it look NICE!

I think that I'm the only person in the world that doesn't like PE rugs. The one I had was never waterproof. Maybe I was unlucky.

No I'm no a fan of PE rugs either. I've had a couple and been really disappointed with them. I did however find baby pink high neck rugs on the Pink Equine website a couple of years ago. They were £30 for a MW high neck rug, and I was reliably informed that they were made by premier equine. They are fabulous rugs, and I'm really glad I brought 2 of em at the time as I've never seen them again!!!

I am an Amigo fan, but they are hugely expensive now. I'm just thinking about tugs for the baby Arab, and like the amigos on her, but the price is definitely putting me off - so I'm very undecided about hat to do rug wise for her tbh. I'm not a weatherbeeta / shires fan, and personally think they are too sloped in the neck for a good fit on many horses (not saying all here though!!!) ;)

I do despair of the quality of late but still better than my other options out there. Beyond HW, all rugs seem to have leg straps. If you don't use the leg straps the rug is always always lopsided. Plus I have a mare that can't have a fillet strap. She gets her tail put through the strap in the tail flap and it never moves.

You bad people ;-) you've just made me order a amigo hero rug from amazon! Amazingly they fit our shire x coblet really well and the magenta colour will look lovely on a black horse!!
