Does anyone else think there is a massive difference betwen jumping at home and at a competition? What way can u narrow the gap between these two?! Any ideas much apparciated!

I have always tried to take my horses away for their training. Obviously working them at home but for lessons, clinics etc alway do it away from home.

I have noticed always my horses are far better behaved at a show, winston normally goes to sleep and snoops has always been well behaved. However, at home they are both cocky little buggers.....

depends on what you are jumping at home! you know the yard i'm in and they are forever setting up really technical lines and exercises that have come across both at home and abroad. its great cause we scool over stuff like this and then often in the smaller classes at 1.10/1.20 its not half as technical as what we have been doing at home! also we tend to go out schooling a fair bit at this time of year. schooling shows aren't shows...more just an exercise!!

yea i no what u mean. well i am getting on really well with my horse at home and we were jumping round 1.05 course with doubles, related distances and a treble, really well in our lesson last sunday but i no that i wudnt be ready to do that out in a competition yet!

I had him out on sat at a traning show and he jumped his doubel clear round a small class but he was just obv a bit livelier, spookier etc but jumped well.

i suppose it is just practice of going out to the shows and then work ur way up the heights slowly? for me and for him!

It is normal to be schooling at a level of around 10cms higher at home than you would expect to meet in the ring. This has the effect of making competitions 'feel' easier, and also allows for any wobbles on your, or your horses part at the show

Couldnt agree more!

yes exactly. treat every show like another schooling session. if you find him livelier etc work him in for a bit longer or even a wee lunge before you head off to the show. we do that with some of them. also if possible try and jump two classes. the second one will usually be easier!!

rgth so if i am jumping 90 out at the mo that wud be about right then?! so if i want to do 1.10 classes i wud need to jump round 1.20 at home! ahh no adreneline either that wud be hard!

Mine tend to go much better at shows than they do at home... think this is probably largely due to me concentrating more and being more focused, because i don't have lessons at home i tend to p!ss around more! Also i find that they are concentrating more when there are more jumps around as when we have 3 or 4 up at home they know they must be jumping one of those and try to guess which one whereas with a course of say 9 or 10 jumps they look to me to say which one!

To answer Sherwood's question though....Yes, basically if you are competing at 1.10m, you would be schooling at home over at least 1.20m, possibly 1.25m (as you would hope to get into the JO at some point where the fences in a 1.10m can go up to 1.20m

)...

No u r lucky to be like that- it wud jsut be pure fear i think for me! Ill get there eventually i suppose!

[/ QUOTE ]

Naww, it shouldnt be fear if you know your horse and you both know you are capable. As long as you work towards it, the more confident you get Im sure when it comes to 1.20 you wont think anything of it.

Gosh I was jumping happily over 1.15/1.20 at home last summer which I cannot believe. But if you do something regularly (well) it gives you confidence FACT

But hell if you asked me to jump a course of 1.05 tomorrow I would wet myself lol

I guess its like me when I go xc schooling, i really do like to have my blood up when i do this - like a competition edge.
However, i find going hunting over the winter acts as a good xc school - or riding a young inexperienced horse over a xc schooling course usually gives me that edge or is that sick too

Why do i put myself through this lol

yea suppose working towards it is the key thing- so that it isnt scary for either of us!

haha u r mad!

At least there seems to be plenty of SJ on at the moment, so choice of venues (inside and out) to go to.
Has to be good for him to be getting out to lots of different places, with diff fillers.

FIona

NB: got the 2 mares shod today with stud holes for the first time in four or five months, so that can get to Tyrella when it starts in 2 weeks. See you there????

Yea exaclty loads of traning shows. Was at silverwood on saturday and goign back this week too and next and then tyrella on 17th for sure! what class r u goign to aim for? the new part xc and SJ courses sound like a brilliant idea! looking forward to it!

Thanks for this thread!!

I've never really done much competitive jumping but really feel like I want to this year!

Sometimes G can be very distracted at home, so I've always assumed he'd be worse at a comp!

This post has settled my stomach a little!

I'll now go expecting things to be easier away (the jumps will be smaller than we do at home)!

I always jump better in the ring than I do at home or in the warm up. I hate warming up - don't know why but I am just pants. At home I don't tend to jump that big as I always ride by myself and can't face getting on and off to put the fences up higher.

LOL thats the same as me!! But its usually coz my horse knocks it where she is rushing so i tend to stay little so i can practice on rythmn and dont have to keep getting off and putting them back up!!

Plus our jumps have been taken away so we are currently using road blocks which have a height of either 2'3 or 3'6!!!

LOL!

I hate jumping in the warm-up too.....don't mind going reasonably big over an upright......but about 1.05m is my limit for an oxer
shocked.gif
Silly really as in the ring i don't even think about it
tongue.gif

I don't enjoy jumping too big at home on my own either...mainly coz like you, i can't be ar$ed to get off and change the fences too often. If i'm in my lesson though i just get on and jump whatever she puts up
