Difference between snaffle and bradoon?

Hi all,

I really hope this isn't a daft question , but I am currently looking for a new bit for a rather large mouthed horse and I have seen some bits that look like snaffles with a lozenge, but are called bradoons.

Am I being daft? Is there a difference? If so is one 'stronger' than the other?

They are one and the same mostly. Bradoon is the name given to the small ringed snaffle that makes up part of a double bridle. Mouthpieces vary but usually you have a small loose ring, some use small ringed eggbuts, other Wilkie's which I personally hate.

As the others have said although it is becoming more common to see the 'normal' large ringed snaffle rather than a bradoon with a double.

A bradoon is the snaffle part of a double bridle.

They are traditionally thinner and have a smaller ring than a normal snaffle.

Have used a bridoon as a snaffle bit for the gelding in my avatar. Like most Arabians he has a little mouth and it worked beautifully.

Bradoons work in the exact same way as a snaffle, though they are often have a thinner mouthpiece and smaller rings. Often used as a snaffle on ponies or a horse with a dainty head

Like NZJenny I used a bradoon for my arab as he looked ridiculous with the larger rings of a normal snaffle. no difference other than that.
