Difference in bits

The lozenge has a smoother profile and so there is less chance of pressure or pinch points occurring. The french link was always the kind bit, because it overcame the nutcracker action of the single joint. However over the past 5-10yrs there has been a lot of product development and now there are a multitude of variations available- one of which is the lozenge :)

I tried putting my finger under both a KK lozenge and a french link and pulling the reins while it was in my Horses mouth. The KK exerted a lot more pressure on the tongue than the french link - but it is an angled lozenge. My Horse stuck his tongue out in the KK but not a french link and my simple test explained why. He hates tongue pressure!
Lozenges can be flat or rotated by varying degrees (Sprenger KK and neue schule). The french link lies flat on the tongue but of course it has the kidney shaped ends.
