I keep on being bombarded by hoof trimming stuff by devoted trimmers online. From the well discussed track one who says the only cause of laminitis is trims to those who say all farriers leave the heel too high and tow to short. Then I saw one just now where hoof have gone from slightly overgrown to apparently correct but tbh barely there. About half the size of what I would expect.

All of this comes with accusations that if you basically don't praise the poster as a genius and always knowing you are an idiot and shouldn't have horses.

How on earth do you not get brainwashed by all if this? I am no expert on feet trimming but this extreme stuff is weird

The only way not to go mad is not to read any of it, I think 😂

I have done some research off social media on biomechanical angles, frog health, how to spot basic, obvious problems and for the rest I just found a well qualified farrier, ask my vet when she sees her (who I'm lucky has a specialty in equine podiatry) and just keep an eye on it. Culty our-way-is-the-highway stuff gets a block if I agree with it or not tbh.

Completely agree, do not get sucked in!

Does the horse have reasonable strong feet without excessive chipping, cracking?

Are the feet mediolaterally balanced within reason, if not is there an obvious conformational reason for this?

Are the frogs in good condition, no deep smelly sulcus?

Is the horse sound, comfortable and moving freely forwards.

My farrier has dealt with my horses for 35yrs. I have shod and barefoot and he is the reason my old boy is still going strong despite a lifetime of competing and travelling all over the world. He treats each horse as an individual and is my go to for anything below the knee. I see these posts by the cult like people who declare farriers are the work of the devil and swerve them. It is truly alarming what they put out there. I don't click on their posts anymore and now don't see them!

100% this.
I don't follow SM crap as half of it is AI generated anyway and often does more harm than good.

Exactly this! My farrier has looked after my horses for 28yrs now, mainly barefoot, but some shod, he has also brought a severe laminitic back from the brink and into a normal healthy life. He treats every horse as an individual, tells me everything he is doing and why, and is happy to answer any questions. My competition horses have been primarily barefoot, competing up to Grand Prix, and none of them have every used a hoof boot or had a special diet, I'm sure their success is down to my farrier, so I listen to him, pay attention to what he does and totally ignore everything else.

Block what you are seeing on the socials, it'll drive you nuts.

if you thought hoof trimmers wars on social media were bad, then don't ever ever like a dog training post. You will be inundated with dog trainer posts, and the comments will always include slagging-off posts saying what that trainer is doing wrong, or why you need trainer X rather than trainer Y....

Snap. The sheer volume of hoof trimming videos and advice dropping into my feed released by dogmatic rage baiting posters is overwhelming.

Force changed my algorithm yesterday after some clap trap comparing pedal bones that supposedly were shod horse vs barefoot.

My hubby has a saying “we always knew these people walked amongst us but thanks to social media we now know their names and an avoid them”.

I love the democratisation of knowledge but we really need to be discerning and use critical thinking don’t we?

I don't get anything on FB from a certain group of trimmers and their followers as they have completely blocked me everywhere.. Of the rest of hoof porn I read some from those people I admire and ignore the rest.

OTOH if hooves are bad dogs and trainers are unbelievable. Having got a couple of new dogs I looked at a couple vaguely to get some idea of the modern world. Very bad mistake, inundated and as you say so much slagging off. Then I ended up on one that advocates electric collars (can't remember the proper name) then the slagging off really started. Everything all over was just sign up to our training. Total money grabbing.

It took a long while to get rid of them all.
