Can someone tell me the difference between riding in a normal snaffle bit and riding in a snaffle with lozenge?

My horse tends to lean on the reins, been working on it with lots of transitions and little rein squeezes but someone recommended to try a snaffle with lozenge. I didn't get an explanation of 'why' this might help so was just wondering if someone could maybe explain

Any other tips welcome too! Thanks!

I believe that the snaffle without the lozenge can hit the top of their mouth at times, but the lozenge lies across the tongue better. Something like that anyway. My last horse went much better in a bit with a lozenge - he would evade a normal snaffle.

when you say a 'normal snaffle' what do you mean? a single jointed?

if so, i really dont like them.. they have a severe nutcracker action, try it on your arm. they used to be the bog standard bit years ago but now a french link or lozenge is more common i think...

the frenchlink or lozenge basically prevents the nutcracker action and helps to minimise the horse being hit in the roof of the mouth... which is one of my hates, horse gets hit in roof of mouth with sj bit, throws head up to evade, martingale hauls it back down

Maybe my friend thinks we're currently using a single jointed bit (i think i said a 'normal snaffle' to her too lol) and thats why she said try a lozenge. I will check that! thanks!
