I have recently purchased a 6'6 weatherbeeta rug which fits in length nicely but really is a terrible fit around his shoulders, I know in hindsight I should have returned it, but it was getting cold and I had no other to put on.The rug is so big that even when I fasten at the tighest point it still looks a bad fit, the rug is very generous.

So I am urgently wanting to buy him another but am unsure what to go for, I wouldn't say he is slightly built just average.
Can you please recommend a rug that is less generous in width or one that fits all , when I bought him he came with a rather short (6') horseware rug that seems to fit his shoulders but obviously too short. Also I don't want to pay a fortune say £80.00 for middleweight with neck.

Thanks for reading.

try a horseware rug, or a fal - i know the fal in particular are more expensive, but it maybe all you need. the Horseware rugs i would try the Rhino range on him - the rambo seem to be broader in the chest in my exp.

What breed is your horse? Mine is a tb x id (6'6 rugs )and she doesn't get on with weatherbeeta either, but Mark Todd or William Funnell rugs fit her perfectly.

Why don't you sew tucks into the neck? Best place usually is about 6 - 8 inches below the withers on both sides, have the 'spare' material folded onto the outside so it doesn't rub; this will give it a snug fit. If you need to you can put another tuck level with his lower neck too. I use strong plaiting thread and it can easily be snipped out if he puts weight on.

I have the opisite prob, i buy weatherbeeta for the big chest, wheatherbeeta and mark todd are known for being generous in the chest were as horsewear and fal have more 'TB' chests! I know it's not ideal but could try putting neck tucks in or try moving the straps? Or could you sell it on e-bay and buy another one. Weatherbeeta hold there price in good cond.

Another vote for Masta rugs - they are far too small round the neck for my heavy horses, so might fit yours a treat

Thanks for your replies

Kitkat- I'm not sure of his breeding, but he isn't broad in the shoulder.
MFH-09 - Yes I could, but I need another rug anyway but if I don't sell it I will try and adapt it.

OrangeEmpire/JingleJangle- thanks I'll look at Masta
