Difficult to fit pony - Rhino LW or other "mini skirt" alternative?

I put up a posting yesterday asking for the cheapest prices anyone's seen for a Rhino LW turnout, and a couple of people suggested maybe not to buy a Rhino as they're expensive.

So the pony I've got seems difficult to fit a rug to. He's a youngster and looks like a greyhound at the moment as still growing!

Measures 5'6" in rug length, and stable rugs of this size do sort of fit him, but turnouts have been a problem. I have a Rhino MW wug plus and a Rhino HW wug plus in a 5'9" size which fit him just fine.

So it seemed the best choice of LW would be the Rhino again. But as they are expensive I would be pleased to hear of any alternatives. The depth on the Rhino Wugs is 37"

I tried a 5'9" Rambo LW on him, but it's just too long in the depth and when measured it's 42" and almost down to his knees! So thats no good.

What I do need is a shorter depth, but generous in the shoulder region, as although he's not wide, he's got a long sloping shoulder, and takes up the measurement from wither to chest area in the neck of a rug.

I quite like the Amigo 600D - but don't know how these come up in depth?

Which other rugs have you found to have the "mini skirt" effect on your horse, I know most people want them deeper, but I want the opposite.

I know one of the girls at our yard bought a series of Saxon rugs for her foal to grow out of - the smallest one ended up on our Section A - only takes a 4'9" rug. Obviously on a long leggy tb it looked like a mini skirt but even on tiny pony it is still fits well - just covers her and isn't to deep. They are also a reasonable price and decent quality.

I'd suggest a Saxon as well, bought one for my TBX (think it was under £50), and everyone refers to it as his miniskirt! Stops him getting his legs caught and trashing it though - which is what he did with the mildly expensive Fal one

My biggest rugs are only 5ft6 - my mare is wearing them, and my filly is in 4ft9 rugs currently.

Masta fit the filly well, but not the mare - mare is wide with big shoulders, shes a huge mover. Filly has a gorgeous shoulder but is an obvious slim yearling. They are too short, really mini skirts on the mare, but not the filly, so they may be worth a look.

They both have an Aerborn MW turnout that suits both well, and a Knight Rider MW each too. Both lovely rugs that fit well and don't rub with nice linings - also not hugely expensive.

if hes 5'6 go for a 5'6 pony rug rather than a 5'6 horse rug, these will have the mini skirt effect ur after for the summer!

TBH I've just bought two Rhino MW turnouts for my girls, and both are quite skimpy in terms of depth (about 4-5" less than premier equine). I think horseware rugs in general are much less generous in size than they used to be.

Thanks, I'll look at the Saxon rugs, and any other pony sized rugs I can find. Masta rugs always come up big so a 5'6" in them might be suitable, the difficulty is the size of the chest, I don't want it tight here in going for the skimpiness on the depth.

Local tack shop has the Amigo's in stock, so I would be able to try these and return easily if they don't fit. Can also measure the depth of them before taking them home as know if they're too long its not going to work.

Yes, look for 'pony' in the title on the Rhino rugs as they are not as deep. Very confusing but you can get a 5'6 Rhino rug and a 5'6 Rhino Pony rug. Also the 600d in Amigo have less depth to them than the 1200d ones.
