got to make the dreaded phone call to the vet tomorrow to make the arrangement for toby to go to the field in the sky. i know it will be the right thing for him and that he has had 2 good years since his illness started but i just can't help feel like i am giving up on him. i also keep asking myself if i am doing the right thing by him. why is life never simple

I don't know the history of his illness but I see you've been together for many years. My thoughts are with you in making such a hard decision whether it be this week or any other.

thanks guys he was the very first foal that i bred and is now 141/2. while i was at uni a friend had him on loan but he came home in a very poor state body score 1. i managed to get some weight back on him then he dropped it all off again turns out in the 2 yrs she had him she never wormed him. he had major worm damage and grade 4 gastric ulcers we have battle since then to keep him well which we did successfully until this last few weeks were he has went down hill and not doing well at all he has cost £14,000 in vet fee's in the 2 years i have had him back.

What a handsome boy! I really feel for you, having made the decision back in May, to say goodbye to my old boy. Its those left behind who hurt the most. I am sorry things didn't work out right for you , but you are doing the one last loving thing we can do for them. Thinking of you both at this difficult time for you. Treasure those sweet memories x

T try and take comfort from the last 2 years and how much you've done for him in that time as you couldn't have done more to try and get him well. Remember the former good times and the more recent ones when you've managed to enjoy him again when he was well enough. A beautiful horse, one of my HHO favourites. Thinking of you x

Lovely lovely horse, and what a privilege to have bred and shared the time with him, but really difficult times ahead as you do the right thing for him, so sad for you x

What sort of breed, size etc is he, do you have any others, could you breed again - it wont take the pain away as he cannot be replaced but it may help to be able to concentrate on something else - -

Kind regards x x x

The fact that you have decided to call the vet for one last time shows that you know you have come to the correct decision. I had a teacher at school who always used to tell us to go with our first thoughts and she was right. Your lovely horse has had a hard time of it and you should be happy that he made it back to you for his final days. Not everyone lives to great old age and sometimes we just have to accept that there is nothing more to be done. It isn't about the money, its about what quality of life that money buys, and you know yourself that it is costing your horse as well as you now.

T read the above its what I wanted to say this morning but could not find the words, no one could of tried harder with him than you and no one could of loved him anymore than you. I just wish I was not so far away, but I know you have a network of mates up there who will get you through this. Loads of hugs pal xxx

So sorry to hear that you're going through the same as me.
My boy has made it to 15 1/2, which for me, is no age at all, had him from 6 months. Mine is currently fully dosed for what I've promised myself will be the last time, we've had 8 years of accumulative health problems.
None of us likes to play God, this is the first time that I've had to make 'that sort of' decision for one of my ponies. The others that I've had to say goodbye to have left me with no choice, it's just so painful to be constantly doubting yourself. When their quality of life becomes an issue it's up to us to make sure that they are not allowed to suffer unnecessarily.
Take care and take solace in the knowledge that you're doing out of love. I can only hope that when my time comes, someone will do the same for me.xxx

Oh I am so sorry to hear this... I remember him being poorly as it was the same time as my lad with same prob...

You have given him such a fantastic home though and he is/has been so well loved in his time.
You are being so brave by making that dreaded call and ending any of his suffering, I take it he never fully recovered from his illness 2 yrs ago?.

Biggest hugs and thoughts to you all...

If you ever want to chat pm me... always a shoulder to cry on and ear to talk to

Very sorry to read your post. I know how hard making that decision is, having had to do it myself several times and it does not get easier the next time.

However, your boy is very lucky to have someone who loves and cares about him enough to go through the pain it inevitably causes us, so that he does not suffer any more. Remember all the many good times you had together, and you are making this decision for him. Quality of life must come before quantity. I really believe our well loved animals are luckier than us in this respect, provided they have brave owners. We owe it to them, for all they give to us.

My thoughts will be with you, hugs .

Will be thinking of you both on Thursday. The hardest day, the one we never want to happen. But you have done this with your gorgeous boys interests at heart and put aside your own heartbreak. Take care of yourself Tikino.
