My problem is that my gelding keeps mounting my mare (big time, if you see what I mean!). I cant split them up for a whole bunch of reasons, but it is causing me problems as the mare is supposed to be resting with an inflamed tendon sheath and cannot imagine his weight is doing a lot of good. Also her back is increasingly tender. Is there anything to reduce the hormones in a gelding? A bit like regumate in mares or something like that. Am really struggling to know what to do!! Any ideas?

Only thing I can suggest is splitting them. If he is a gelding then surely his hormone levels should be fairly settled and therefore his behaviour is due to habit/behavioural reasons rather than for hormonal reasons. I have a gelding who has to go out alone due to stallion behaviour. We spoke at lengths with the vets, checked he wasn't a rig and have now simply accepted. Is there no way you could electric fence him off from your mare?

Thanks Marchtime. Apparantly there is some stuff called Rig Calm which I am going to try (ordered it). Unfortunately electric fencing isnt an option as she just very neatly pops over it. I also tried borrowing taller electric fencing from a friend and all that happened was he walked through it

! I am considering getting him tested as a rig as I have the vet coming out next week anyway to check on the mare

they use regumate on stallions with good effect. might b worth looking into. I have had a problem with our gelding welsh A mounting my 2 shettie girls. It happened when they were in season. they were squirting at him and running into him backwards so we couldn't blame him. we couldn't really blame him but due to the size difference (he is 12.2hh they are 8hh and 8.1hh) they had to be separated. Separation is a must really. It is very bad for their backs. luckily my sis is a mctimoney-corely animal manipulation + sprts massage therapist. but it took a couple of weeks to get them right. Is the mare on a supplement like stroppy mare. because if she is being a total tart, can u really blame him! hehe!
hope it helps

My boy is the same?? But there are mares the other side of the fence, he cant get them but he paces the fence and flirts like mad, he gets his bits out all the time and gets so excited he has started to get really aggressive with me!!! Do the things mentioned above work???

I had a gelding that had previoulsy been a rig and thus was VERY stallion like with mares - Rig Calm worked a treat and definately reduced his urges. Hopefully it will do the same for your lad!
