Talisker (lurcher, approx 10 years old) had a stomach upset about 4 weeks ago caused by some ham. Islay and I ate the ham and were fine, so no idea why he reacted to it, but he had dreadful diarrhoea overnight

As usual I starved him for 24 hours, gave him ProKolin, and kind of assumed he would be OK.

Ever since then though he has not been 'right' - he has not been eating very well, has lost approx 2kg (now weighs 25.65kg) and although he has not had diarrhoea he has not been 'normal'

Last Thursday I tried changing his diet to a different all-in-one to get him to eat more - he loved the new stuff, but again had dreadful diarrhoea overnight. Starved him Friday morning (more ProKolin!) and took him to the vets straight after work on Friday pm. I was told to starve him until Saturday night, then start feeding Royal Canin Sensitivity Control tinned food. Since Saturday Talisker has had diarrhoea all the time, despite having an antibiotic injection on Friday evening (Betamox 3mls) and tablets twice daily from Friday evening onwards (Cotrimoxygen 80m). The vet got a stool sample on Friday evening (best not to ask what happened

) but has not had the results back yet

Has anyone - especially Star - got any ideas what on earth is going on? I am stressing myself stupid about him having permanent diarrhoea, he is ravenously hungry so is on 3 cans of RC sensitive stuff a day which is costing me a fortune but does not seem to be doing any good
confused.gif
Surely the special diet and the antibiotics should be sorting the diarrhoea by now
confused.gif
Help please? I feel like going to another vets and getting a second opinion, I dont want Talisker to go the same way as Jura did

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it

I just have no idea whether I am worrying unnecessarily, or whether it is as serious as I fear it is, or what to do

Talisker does seem fairly well in himself though, he is curled up asleep in the dogbed next to the radiator at the moment

I would be inclined to try boiled rice and mix it with less of the meat. Haz would get colitis without fail every summer when it was hot and I would syringe lectade into him orally every 10 mins... gave up with the syringe and used a very clean washing up liquid bottle ( little sod wouldn't drink it from the bowl). The rice worked well but with everything introduce slowly.

not sure about those antibiotics he's on. i'd have him on metronidazole unless it's more of a colitis type diarrhoea with blood and mucus, in which case i'd have him on salazopyrin. sens is the best food for him and pro-kolin is good stuff. ham is quite a common cause of digestive upsets so it's quite possibly the cause. it may have given him a bit of inflammatory bowel disease - sometimes this needs steroids to sort it out so need to wait for faecal results first and make sure it's not bacterial or parasitic before starting on steroids. hope that helps a bit.

I would be doing the following:

Totally starve for 24hrs. Then:

Feed boiled (long grain) rice and scrambled egg in very small ammounts for the next 24hrs - no suppliments and nothing whatsoever that was canned/bagged - organic is best if you can get it.

I don't have much faith in Royal Canin as it never worked on my old boy...he did better with my home cooked rice/egg mix. Give it 24 hrs stavation and then 24 hrs feeding...if the poo is more solid than it was then carry on.

If there was no improvement I'd be back to my vet for more tests and be quite insistant that they took bloods etc, etc. I'd not be satisfied with them just cheecking his stools...

Good luck xxx

Ah thank you Star, I am so pleased you are online

There is definitely no blood/mucus in the diarrhoea, so that is one good point.

Can I give him prokolin now - and would it do any good? I have lots of it available at the moment as I ordered 2 30ml tubes online
smile.gif
But my vet said ONLY to give him the RC diet stuff, and like an idiot I forgot to ask whether the prokolin was OK
crazy.gif

I've asked them to chase the results so hopefully will have them tomorow, but at least I am armed with some thoughts now to put forward depending on what the results show and what my vet says
smile.gif

Thanks Woolly - I was tempted to try rice, but the vet was very clear that I should ONLY feed the RC diet stuff? I wanted to take Talisker back yesterday but vet said no point until the test results are back
frown.gif

Whatever the outcome is, Talisker is going straight onto a sensitive stomach diet when he is finally sorted
crazy.gif

yes, definitely give the pro-kolin. there's nothing in that which will make the diarrhoea worse and it should help. he's already been starved twice so i wouldn't do that again - if it didn't help then it wont now. stick with the diet and get the results before changing anything else.

Thanks Popdog - I'm going on the vets advice with the RC stuff, but should hopefully get the results back tomorrow so can ask about changing the diet then! Believe me I will be the first one asking for bloods if the faecal test doesnt show anything - if you can be bothered to trawl back you will find all my posts about Jura, my greyhound who was PTS in April - she had a similar thing, and three lots of blood tests showed nothing abnomal

Thanks Star

I will give him a dose now, although for some reason he doesnt like it

I am embarrased to say that I have just realised how much I am abusing your good nature by asking you stuff online like this

I am so sorry, I didnt think before I posted, so I apologise for asking you for a second opinion like this, I shall send you a consultation fee before I ask next time

Well I would imagine his digestion was excellent for a while

Talisker actively pulls faces when I give it him, whilst Jura used to tolerate it very well

Thank you, I will post when I have an update from the vets

My three Finnish Lapphunds likes Pro-kolin, they usually open their mouth to get Pro-kolin. Puppies are in the hooversnout stage, if it's on the ground and they can reach it...
k050.gif
, and Jonna sees that they get Pro-kolin and she doesn't, so the times she also needs Pro-kolin (well, if the puppies are eating rubbish...
g030.gif
) she gets so happy when she realises that she's going to get some to (+my Cornish Rex cat eats Canikur voluntarily).

Sorry to hear about Talisker. I don't usually use Royal Canin, but the Sensitivity, Intestinal really seems to work. Though you have my full sympathy for the hole it makes in your wallet, 12 cans Intestinal, about 225 swedish crowns, needs 2 cans each per day until their stomach settles...
ETS Reading that, I think I need to start peeing gold, so if somebody have any hint on how to start, I would be most grateful?! /ets
*runs frantic around the room, touching everything made of wood, before texting* Though their stomachs seems to have gotten a little harden lately, so fingers crossed, touch more wood and that.
Really hope you'll be able to give us good news, when you update us.

from Sweden.
