My mare went lame 10 weeks ago, she had swelling and heat in her near fore. As she had not had an obvious injury I cold hosed and bandaged but kept turning her out during the day as she is very stressy and box walks, weaves and cribs so I felt she would do less damage stood still in her small winter turnout paddock eating hay than charging around her box.
After 2 weeks, swelling had nearly gone but there was still heat in the fetlock and she was still lame so I arranged an appointment to take her to the local clinic, she appeared to be improving slowly so I wasn't in a rush. The following week, three weeks after the initial injury the vet did lameness work up and found a fracture in her canon bone. She had 7 weeks box rest after which she was still lame, yesterday upon further examination she has damaged her extensor tendon, on the x-ray it looks like a bumpy line along her pastern bone and you can see new bone forming underneath. Vet described it like there are lots of litle branches running off the tendon into the bone and she has torn these. Fracture still showed but vet said it might be nearly healed, that the x-ray is the last thing to heal so not to worry. Prescribed another 6 weeks box rest.
Unfortunately due to her stressy nature I have had to keep her sedated with sedalin all the time she has been in, she has been rearing and bucking in her stable and kicking holes in the walls at times, and box walks. Weaving has all but stopped :)

I asked vet about turnout he said I could fence a small paddock but if she jumped out (unlikely) or ran around (more likely) she would be back to square one.
I can't decide what to do for the best, the paddock wouldn't be much bigger than her stable and since she box walks anyway I thought she might do less damage or the same amount but at least be able to enjoy the sun and see her friends. She generally is happy to stand about all day outside the only problem would be if they all had a mad half hour zooming about and she trotted around while they did it.
Has anyone else had a similar injury? What did you do and what was your outcome?
Thanks for any/all responses!!
