hi guys
Ive got a 29 inch Shetland colt who is 6 months old ,, got him as a pet for my 3 yr old daughter as when I'm up the yard is nice for her to groom him and he is great
when i got him i new he had problems but he was going to be shot the next week, so i got him free and just had to get transport.
well Ive had the vets out and now he has to have correcive farriery
the problem is have any of you seen how much this actually works
he has one club foot where the superficial digital flexor tendon is too tight), varus (e.g., bowlegged) and valgus (e.g.,
knock-kneed), affecting mostly the front legs his hinds are not good ,
one of my friends thinks i should have him pts but im going to try to down the farrier route
basically his front hooves just touch the ground on the toe , so the farrier is coming next week to have a look ... i think the idea is to try and get the heel on the ground , cant see it myself
have any off you seen this work ?
im so upset but i know i got him and i new it was bad , hes in no pain and he is the funniest little thing you have ever seen im going to get some photos
thanks holly

If he is in no pain, and is enjoying life, then I really don't see a problem. It's not as if you are planning to go round Burghley on him, so he doesn't need to be super-sound, just happy!

Can't help with advice on corrective farrier, but my friend is a vet with a mini shetland with dodgy leg so will ask her later.

See what your farrier says, if he can do something to improve his foot balance and weight bearing issues, then you are doing as much as you can. If things change and he does appear to be in pain, then you will know you have to do the right thing then, but not until then.

Good luck with farrier.
