One of my horses got laminitis last summer but luckily doing well at present. Consequently I have become paranoid and always checking the digital pulse of both my horses. The one that did not get it had a fairly strong (not bounding) digital on Monday after ridng (was nothing there before) but had got a bit stressed out hacking and napped particularly badly at one point. By morning it had gone but kept him in 3 days just in case. Not been able to feel it since. Rode tonight and again had a nappy ride as schooled in field and he wanted to go back to yard and again cld feel the pulse when got off. Never noticed this on none nappy days before. Most laminitis sites say increase in this pulse is only lami or infection. Anyone else had any experience of this for other reasons?

Did you check his heart rate? Might be an idea to check it after exercise and restain yourself from checking the digital pulses until his heart rate is back down to resting. No experience of this - just a suggestion!

as soloequestrian has just said think about it logically. When we exercise our pulse rate goes higher and this will be the same for all animals or people as well. If your horse is stressed or nappy then obviously his pulse rate will rise because he is stressing. However if your horse is relatively fit and his pulse rate is still high after 20 minutes or so then I would be wondering why the digital pulse was still bounding.

I know but exercise is not supposed to cause the digital pulse to be affected. I know I am being paranoid. I was a worrier before about my animals but having experienced my first major health issue in 18 years of horse owning I have become so concerned all the time. I know I need to chill a bit! I did not check the digital before the lami experience so this may have always been the case as he is a nappy bugger! And I suppose the web sites sometmes can be misleading and send us off into more worry!

thanks for that, I'll try to not check 4 times a day as probably over checking is not helping!! I often get that pulse thing in your eyelid but I don't worry I'm heading for anything but with our animals we always think the worse!
