Sorry if this is long!

OK, I have one horse on box rest - has been for 5 months and will hopefully be brought back into work over the next month or so.

I have another horse that I bought nearly 2 years ago that I love dearly but he has just grown too big for me - I have 5ft4 and he is a good 17.2hh. I put him out on loan in the summer to a girl that had competed up to grand prix lever dressage and trained with some of the best. I really liked her and trusted her and was happy for him to go there. Over the months cracks started showing and I realised that he was not being looked after very well, she was using him to teach which was not agreed and generally he was just left in his own poo. I went to collect him as soon as I found out and brought him home. (he was 300 miles round trip away so couldn't check up weekly!!!)

So he is back now and as I said, I completely love him to bits but due to my never ending back problems I just haven't been able to do anything with him - which in a way has been good as he was a different horse when I got him back, and needed some time to chill. So I have a very bored horse that I need to find a new home for.

So what do I do? He is 17.2hh 7 years old, chestnut, unpapered Trakehner, total gent - not sharp!! Needs a confident rider because of his age and size, always in ribbons at local shows and unaf dressage, has also done xc schooling (very keen and will jump anything!) and jumped BSJA on a ticket, again fabulous jumper never stops and will jump anything just needs some work on technique. Good in traffic and open spaces, generally a lovely horse. He is very unfit but can chuck a saddle on after a few months and he is the same as if ridden daily. So do I bite the bullet and sell him - if so for how much or risk another failed loan home and have him back to sort out again after 6 months??

Who would he be appealing to??

Thanks, hot choc and biscuits for all those that got this far!

Ah, he really does sound like a super star of a horse, LP.

What about loaning him again - but from home this time??? I too would be reluctant to sell him on, but can understand why you may want to.....

SS, I have had an ad up for the last month offering him for share/loan/sale to the right home - offering anything as tailor made as people want but nothing - ok it was only in one very small tack shop to put the feelers out!! But nothing. I love hi to bits but I hate seeing him doing nothing, he is talented so should be out having fun.

Problem is, he came from a nasty home before I got him, so am very protective of him, but then I also worry about getting him back ruined if he goes out on loan!!

He sounds like a riding club dream horse.

Sadly I'm not much taller than you - would have been grovelling (to you and OH) otherwise

.

I'm sure their has to be someone in visitable distance who would be suitable. Why not put an ad on horsepoo.

in my experience, you are better off selling, but offering a guaranteed buy back should they not get on with him. this is what i do, it offers me (and buyer) peace of mind and a safety-net of security for the horse.
i've loaned out before and found that some people take a lot more care of something they have actually paid for, "company car mentality" kind of thing.
he sounds lovely, as if he'd go and be a really nice RC or Eventer for someone, and his age isn't against him at all... as a big horse, he's just the right age to crack on with now.
you could send him to someone with a good reputation to prepare and sell him for you, he sounds straightforward and as if it wouldn't take long to get him up to a standard where he could win some rosettes and be worth quite a bit more than he would be out of the field.

He's sounds gorgeous! Had he been around last year I would have bitten your hand of to loan him, unfortunatly I'm now at uni miles away

I would suggest looking for a loan home, but one closer to home this time, as he sounds very dear to you. Not sure where in Cambridge you are, but you puts ads in places like Equicentric, Alan's ark, French's, The Barn Shop, Highgate etc. They often have advert for loans/shares in there.

Just to say, that I don't think that size is an issue for many (unless like LP you have a bad back). I'm only 5'4" and loaned a good 17hh plus mare before buying my current horse. It was no problem at all. She was mannerly, not strong and a dream to ride. So don't let the bigger horse put you off

Ah thats really sad

some people are such selfish b***ards, he sounds like a lovely boy Id have him if I had the money and room! Lol x
Anyway personally I would full loan him to someone with a view to buy (make sure you tell them what you want for him so it doesn't get to the end of the loan and they haven't got the money..happens so often)!!! loan him at your yard or nearby for 6 months to a year or something and then sell him, if its nearby you can check up weekly which you need just so this doesn't happen again. Or maybe someone you know or a friend of a friend??
But yes I would def say loan first just to be sure..you dont want the poor boy unhappy again

Good luck hunny x

I so want!! As others have said you could try loaning more locally if you dont want to sell, but he sounds like the sort that would be very easy to sell on. If only he had come up for sale a few months ago, i would have bitten your hand off for him!! Got my boy now though - hes a good height for me too

You could PM me more details too! I'm the east midlands and looking for something to share with my husband, so need something over 16hh!

Loan with a view to buy would be perfect we're looking to buy but the opportunity to have a loan first and be sure it is the right horse for us would be brilliant!
