I recently moved yards, as I found a yard on my own, near home, on my own....all very lovely!

I have 2 mares; my 13 yr old who has had the summer off (about 8 weeks), and only been ridden a handful of times since we changed yards & a 6 yr old pony I bought for the kids - realistically doesnt do much, but has a good life, and I am intending (when I find the time) to try and break her to drive.

I now need to get my mare fit ready for hunting......the problem being leaving the pony on her own.

There are horses in the field next door, but both mine and the ones next door are strip grazed, so she cant always see/sniff at them, although they do call back to her sometimes. However, when I ride my mare out she calls and calls and calls.....obviously, when I go out hunting for the day, and am riding for several hours at a time getting my horse fit, she will be calling for a long time on and off!

I'm stuck for what to do really!

I dont really want a 3rd horse. Financially really....and time wise....I cant ride 2 (certainly not till next year when my youngest child goes to full time school), though I dont mind doing the work.....

I pay for each stable, so would have to pay a 3rd stable rent, which I cant justify.....

Ideally, I would like to find someone to come to the yard with me.....there is one person I know who *may* like to come, but I dont want to jump at that, as I may regret it later!!!

I did think about asking the ladies next door if they would like to put one of their horses in my fields (I could strip it so there wouldnt be any danger of injury), as they have limited grazing and I think their horses live out 24/7 so it *may* help them, but might be a faff letting them know when I will be riding etc.

Or I get another myself.....perhaps a loan? I did think about the Blue Cross or something....one that cant be ridden & that I could send back if circumstances changed etc......

Or lastly, I just leave it and the pony will get used to it.....but will she??? Is it cruel!!?? Am I panicking over nothing??

TIA!

i'd go with the easiest option 1st and ask the people with the horses next door about using your field.
hopefully they'll say yes and hopefully problem solved

if they say no then maybe go with the companion idea.
