Dilema

Friend has a much loved horse that she is having to sell.Initially she is going on loan and friend thinks the yard she is going to (which she has visited) is lovely which it is.HOWEVER she lives in a rural area where most horses enjoy very good turnout including this one.This yard is an urban one and turnout is very restricted.I don't know if friend is aware of this or not.Don't know whether to say anything or not.What would you do?

Hmmm, depends how much exercise horsey will get at the urban yard. If it's everyday (or near enough) then it might not be a problem.

Maybe just ask your friend a few questions about the yard and see how aware she is of things like turnout.

Exercise everyday or not, if the horse cannot be turned out in a field then the new loanee could have a different horse on her hands.

Personally I would not livery my horse anywhere that didn't offer good turnout. That to me, is the most important factor in a yard. I would tell your friend, though if she did visist the yard surely she would of asked about this to keep the routines quite similar?

You can always mention it. I started learning to ride on horses with almost no turnout except for occasional holidays. Some took to it, some didn't and were sold on. In an ideal world just about everything would be out 24/7 but it is possible to have healthy happy horses in quite unnatural environments. At least with a loan if it doesn't work out a more suitable home can be found...
