Dilemma - need advice please!

Hello everyone! I have a bit of a dilemma...

I have the opportunity to buy a Registered Welsh D (with excellent breeding including Parc Welsh Flyer, Nebo Black Magic, Ebbw Prince, Ebbw Victor and Parc Lady), 5 years old, but unbacked and windsucks, for £500... Owner cannot afford to keep him so just wants a good home where he'll at least be backed.

Now then... I currently have a sharer for Genie, who has said they could do a few more days and therefore give me some more money, but I do not want to jeopodise the pony I have obviously!

Having done the maths I could keep him on grass livery, have him insured without LOU and have his feet trimmed for about £125/month (adding on a bit within that for any extra bills like vaccinations!). He would be an excellent summer project even if I just backed him and sold him on, but I would like to get into county showing which I cannot do with Genie as she's not registered (and I will NEVER sell Genie).

What do I do?! At £500 he's almost too good to miss... Obviously I'd have a 2stage vetting done...

Cookies, hot chocolate, pimms, muffins, etc to everyone who got this far, and double helpings to whoever replies!
 
If you can afford to keep him, and you like his nature, and he passes a vet then go for it!
Do be aware though, that if you and him dont click and you therefore dont keep him as a show horse, that his resale will be affected by his windsucking.
If you weigh up pro's and con's of him, and the pro's win, then enjoy your new project!
 
If you have done your sums and can afford it, and you are sure you have the time to put in the hours with him - then go for it!!

I think if you are confident you can afford it you should go for it!!

Even if you decide not to keep him, at least then he'll (hopefully) be a useful horse with a future rather than something that I think is more likely to get passed around cheaply and possibly end up in the wrong hands or somewhere less he is appreciated than he deserves.
 
Remember it will always cost more than you expect, so if moneys tight with your claculations, then it will be even tighter when it comes to it.
 
I would also be careful of the grass livery option as not many Welshies I know in little or no work can live off grass 24/7 without being at serious risk of fat and laminitis...just something to consider. Have you costed in the equipment you will need to back him/her with...
 
I always think that things like this look great on paper, but it comes to it, it never works out that well!!

I've been trying to put money away each month for my horse fund, and working out my earnings, my payouts etc, I should have a far bit left..... until the car's clutch went..... and the brakes needed doing.... and its someones birthday etc!!

I would seriously think about it. Don't feel you have to do it, because it looks like a bargain!!
 
Instead of the £500 outlay -which you can put towards his keep - offer to take him, back him and sell him for a % of his final sale price, which won't be too high on account of the windsucking?
 
Although this could work well, I do agree with AM that it will be a reallll struggle to afford him, and rest assured I am sure the owner wont feel that you are letting her down if you decide to bow out. Think of the winter months, or the unexpected vets bills, or the the time when your sharer lets you down re your other horse and you have to sacrifice time that would have been spent on him on your new project horse, who may or may not work out. Forgetting the breeding, he has a vice, and you need to (as you obv are by posting this post) think about it very harshly to yourself, worst case scenarios etc. Good luck with your decision making.
 
If you want him so you can enjoy showing at aff level then have him, if you want him to re sell then I think if you add up all the money spent you are unlikely to make much on him due to the windsucking, all those £125pcm will add up. Also difficult to tell his quality without pics, Frank has a lot of that breeding but isn't really show quality.

Re the grass livery I think welshies can live out 24/7 if they are in sufficient work but this may be difficult with an unbacked youngster so you will have to be more careful lami wise for a bit. Am sure you know this having genie, I have to work Frank 6 days a week quite hard without fail, regardless of anything else goingon. He's never had lami even when he was hugely overweight when I bought him but I like him as fit as poss to be able to compete too.
 
Thank you everyone for your replies! I need to have a real look at the figures... Here's the best photo I have of him for those who would like to see! He's only been lunged a handful of times and is seriously lacking in muscle at the moment, and has been living out 24/7 since December.

He's not been backed so has no muscle. Once backed and in work and given a little longer to mature as he's Welsh D he should chunk quite nicely I'm hoping... IF I get him!
