went to check on ponio this morning and instead of her sides running smooth she has a dip on both sides just after where her ribs stop a bit like an indent. just thought she looked like a pony thats not looked after

she is fit at the mo and working alot and only on grass and a small feed in the evening consisting of 1 small scoop hifi, garlic, small cupped handful of calm and condition and a handful of slow release energy nuts.

ive tried to body score too and she seems to be coming up as moderate/fair depending on which on you use

any help suggestions as to what the dips are?

I always thought it was lack of water or worms that makes them looked tucked up, don’t know why i think this but someone must have told it to me at some point.

Difficult to commenton a horse without seeing it - a few thoughts ahve come to mind-How much hay/haylage/fibre is she getting? and is it good quality?, sometimes a lack of fibre can make them looked "tucked up", as can a virus or worms. How old is she/ what is her height /weight?, is the worming up to date? could just be that she needs to put on a bit of weight possibly.

Or- it could be a heave line, does she have COPD/dust allergy, has she been coughing/snotty nose?
You could always speak to your vet if you are worried, and also some of the feed companies for feed advice.

didnt have my phone with me but if she still looks like it later i'll get a picture.

basically it looks like someone has thrown a football at her in the area between her ribs and hind legs and its left a mark.

How old is your pony cos I have an 23yrs TB gelding who can look tucked up even though he is regularly wormed and has plenty of good forage and feed. Its just him tbh.

I may get laughed at but could she have been cold last night.

My pony used to do this when he was chilly.

I can tell you im in scotland and it was absolutely freezing at 9pm really cold.

Im away to start putting a medium weight rug on my mare if the weather is going to be as cold as that.

No one should laugh at you for that comment, it is a good observation!

Was your pony anxious about anything? They can tuck up if they are unsettled too

I am sure you will find him back to normal this arvo.

shes only 9 and IDxTBx

maybe she'd only just got up and hadnt got warm yet. i gave her some more grass straight away. something for her to do and get her moving.

shes regularly wormed, has water etc and is getting her winter coat thro which never helps her look good.

think maybe you're right and she got cold last nite. thought i cld get away with no rugs for a little longer --- shes meant to be a hardy pony think ive turned her into a wimp

I would say if she is wormed and has access to forage then it was probably her being a bit tucked up from being a bit cold. It's not a laughable comment my chestnut horse, it's true

If it rained then maybe that is why she was colder than she should have been considering she is a hardy type.
