My pup has really dirty smelly ears so the vet gave me some drops which clear them up quite quickly but then it comes back within a couple of weeks of finishing the course! The last drops I got I only managed 2 days of giving him the drops before he ate the bottle and all the liquid leaked out. Does anybody know of anything I could do to try and help it? and/or does anybody know if human ear drops are safe to use with dogs? (as slightly cheaper than the ones the vet prescribes!) My old dog used to get dirty ears but the vet said they were fine and she never bothered but with my new pup they seem to be really itchy for him. Advise appreciated, thanks!

Iv got cleanaural from my vet, it was like 7quid for a 100ml bottle.... your vets might be different in price.
Just a little squirt in the ear canal, then squidge it around a bit by massaging from the outside, then cotton wool, and scrape all the nasty stuff out!

mmmmm yummy!
There are also things like ear wipes which you can get from vets or pets at home and you could just use those on a regular basis as they are cheaper (but will not get as deep as drops!)
Also in terms of the pup chewing the bottle..... put it in a higher place! will save you money!

I sell ear drops in my shop, can't remember how much they are. I had to use them for my lab pup. Worked well, they clean and kill mites, which from the sound of it your dog has. Just check the bottle and buy from a pet shop, cheaper than vets and does the job.

lol yea was not me, do not have money to waste! was my ever so clever younger brother! I think we had the same or similar for him but Im becoming a bit of a regular at the vets and they like to check up on the animals several times which is great but it costs about £30 per consultation! Charlie loves having his ears cleaned out, think its just a relief from having to itch. Ill have a look at the wipes and see if they do the job. Thanks!

Is his outer ears very hairy down where his auditory canal begins? If he is, I suggest you VERY carefully try to remove some of it (please note, I'm only talking about the hairs that could grow from a bit above the beginning of the auditory canal and upwards), that could help to stop his ears from getting so dirty.

But some dogs are born with more narrow auditory canals than others, and their ears tend to get more dirty than those that have wider ones. If that's what causes his problems, then you can only try to clean them regularly, and hope that it keeps them clean enough for you to avoid the vet's more expensive drops.

from Sweden.

Could it be mites? I am a recent convert to Thornit after having it recommended on here.

We got three different types of drops from the vets and none of them worked, our male dog developed an allergy to the mites and his ears were a total mess.

After spending a lot of money and going through a lot of stress with a very anxious boy who was in a lot of discomfort, I bought Thornit for a fiver and it has worked a treat.

It also worked on his sister, who also had ear mites, but wasn't in such obvious pain.

If it's not mites, then ignore me...
