I've not been using this forum long, and have found everyone welcoming and very helpful.

That's what I told someone here for the first time earlier today ("Newbie Alert!"). A newcomer obviously putting her toe in the water and politely saying hello.

How disappointing to see that in fact, I've been the ONLY person to say hello back to her! And I told her you're all so friendly....:(

Ibble beat me to it.
It really does depend on the time of the post as to whether it is seen or not.

That's the downside of this new forum, the old one was much better for threads being visible for longer.

I did look at that post, and while I wish her and 'bump' well; I'm afraid I would have commented on her lack of hat/appropriate footwear. I'm a safety bore and I was aware that was not the response she was looking for so I didn't comment.

:)

Sorry, have to agree.

I was just scrolling through this to say that I thought the lack of replies was probably due to people managing to keep their comments on the picture to themselves. Most restrained I thought it.

I'm sure we've all done daft things (in fact there are whole threads saying we do!). We just probably don't post photos of ourselves doing it! :D I'm pretty safety-conscious these days (not when I was younger!) but to be honest I didn't even think of that when I looked at this young lady, sitting on her pretty horse with her huge bump...

Don't worry she's getting lots of encouraging comments now, and the crusty amongst us have still refrained from commenting.

This is more a forum where you just jump in and start posting (often after you've lurked for a bit :)) - it's just too big to do the whole newbie post thing (not that newbie's aren't welcome you understand :)):):)

aka........cant be bothered to type hello back! oooh i really should sit on my hands this evening!
Above said tongue in cheek btw!

I must confess I can't be bothered with all that false polite conversation such newbie posts result in I come on here to see what attracts my interest and post on that that does I do enough polite conversation on unimportant things I really do not have much interest in at work, so at home i avoid like the plague, does that make me unfriendly?

I saw it earlier and declined to post too for the same reasons as already mentioned.

I'm pretty sure that if she's brave enough to post a picture of herself on a horse with no hat, wearing flip flops and ready to drop any second now, she's thick skinned enough to cope without the whole forum having to wave hello.

trouble is the board is so busy that posts sometimes disappear into the abyss before anyone notices them:)

I agree but what we really need is a special place to say "hi"
Hope your friend is not too put off. It can be a bit daunting because there are so many members, but the vast majority of them are great, after all we are all horse lovers.

This - thank goodness - thought I was the only one! Really cannot be bothered but don't think I am unfriendly, just lazy probably! Oh and I also did say hello on this occassion but did also comment on safety issues!

Maybe it would be more constructive to say hi and welcome, then gently suggest she thinks about her safety?

That maybe, but it is an open forum so when you post you get what you get!

Have to admit I find wavey/say hi posts kind of boring and rather fluffy/pukey so I just scan over them and read posts that are more interesting. In this case I did open it, but with that pic it was rather a can of worms, so I decided to step away!

If a newcomer to the boards needs their hand held after posting, perhaps a thicker skin should be sought before posting again?
