This morning I went for a lesson at a riding school not too far from me. I've ridden there once or twice and they know my abilities (all four gaits comfortably, jump up to 3 foot ect) and they put me on a VERY lazy, over weight cob type. I'm not adverse to cobs, or lazy horses particularly but when I only get to have lessons occasionally it would be nice to ride something forwards - I had asked for either Callie or Boris both finer breeds that work off the leg.

They gave me a schooling whip, which I changed for a short one. I did manage to get a fairly nice tune out of Vinnie in the end but my god I worked for it, and he bucked which was promptly met with a sharp tap on the butt!

I'm beginning to think its just riding schools in London as I have MANY fond memories of numerous riding schools up north that would give you forward, yet challenging rides.

I was told at the end of the lesson that they'd given me Vinnie as they knew I'd get him to work and he'd thrown 4 other people off in a week through excitment. WTF?! I won't be going back there again.

*sigh* I think I'll avoid riding schools completely.

Luckily, on a happier note, I'm off to meet snowysadude and snowy tomorrow and shes kindly agreed to take photos, will definately post so you can have a snigger at how bad my riding is :)

Maybe you were supposed to be having a lesson on how to get an LBI to go foreward happily,I'd ditch the whip and learn to smile :)

Sorry you had a poo lesson :( What RS was it? (PM or fb me if you like)

And obv it isnt *all* riding school's in London...!

Also, would just like to say... Missy, WHERE is this report?! I want to see some pictures of Snoooowy :D xxx

I think it's down south as well! I phoned to book a lesson at a RS down the road and told them my experience - done a bit of most things, very comfortable in any gait and only start getting jittery when jumps get to about 3'6. I get there and a fat, heavy (beautiful though!) cob who looked half asleep came out. Now I love cobs so I wasn't going to judge but would the bloody thing move? Would it hell. She then told me, proudly, that "these riding school horses aren't trained like your average horse at home. To stop, drop the reins and lean right back. See? He's stopping, well done!" sweet jesus I'm thinking...

So she cracks the jumps out. Apparently my jumping position was so awful she said she was uncomfortable putting it up any higher than 18 inches because I was going to put him off. She TOLD me I was scared stiff (wasn't) and kept going OH THAT WAS GOOD OF HIM TO JUMP THAT AFTER THE WAY YOU RODE HIM

I mean what the ****. It was more fun when we were little and had an excuse to be rubbish :D

I think the riding school ponies are usually nippier. I went for some lessons a little while back and they gave me a lazy bu*ger who was such hard work, my thighs were dead after! I wasn't going to risk getting that beast again (as they seem to out you on one and expect you to stick with it, where I like change) I went to another school and rode an ex jumper who was much more fun! He was lovely and I enjoyed jumping him. Think if were paying the money we should really speak up and demand classier horses :p:D

I sympathise but we always put new riders on something ploddy! You wouldn't believe the amount of muppets that turn up saying they can ride when they can't and a sports horse would kill them! Ask if they have the better horses, if they do, stick with it and keep going and you'll get moved up.
