Has anyone else had a discectomy and if you did, how long until you rode again?

Just had my 6 week check up and although I am suffering from pain in muscles around wound (due to having a damn cough in the past week) I was hoping to maybe have a quiet ride tomorrow. My surgeon told me today that I must not ride until ATLEAST 3 months have passed as movement will hinder healing.
So dissapointed, thats another 6 weeks away and means no way will my horse be fit to ride across wales like I intended in May.

I had discectomy 3 yrs ago now, Originally consultant said 4-6 months off horse, whilst i was having physio after the op i had check up and he said 3 months, It was about 10 weeks after when i got on. I just had a little walk around and was fine, we got back into it and did our first dressage test 3.5 months after the op.
*touch wood* i have been great ever since

dont rush it, they have to cut through your long back muscles and it has to have time to recover and strengthen back up.

Hope this helps x

I wasnt sent back to physio, my surgeon didnt agree with it pre op and he hasnt referred me back.

My horse will be looney by then, No one around here wants a free ride on a good horse!

He also said i wasnt meant to do any heavy lifting until 6 months, but as we are farmers its been hard to stand back and not muck in and help, i've been moving feed bags, mucking out the horses since week 3, god hope i havent ruined things!

I had the op on April 21, got the go-ahead from doctor to ride after 12 weeks but because horse was out on grass for summer I didn't actually ride until 16 weeks after the op.
However since then I've passed my stage 2 exam, ridden a 3yo cross country schooling and hunted an (almost) full season.
Don't rush back- my attitude would be why in god's name would you risk going back to the pain you had before the op?

You are so right, i have been in such a rush to get my life back, that i havent been very sensible. I NEVER want to go through that pain again and i had it for 10 months.

The surgeon said today that if im not careful it will just come back, (i didnt mention what i had been doing!)

Hi, I had one done about 3 years ago now, i waited 3 months to ride, but was a little naughty in lifting things i shouldn't but not too much. I couldn't bear the thought of going through that pain again so it was enough to keep me behaving lol. It was hard to wait that long especially as I had no pain or anything and felt best I had done for years but it was worth it as my back is now best ever and not in pain at all. Just wait and give it time to heal you will be thankful in the end!
