I have a 5 yr old grey mare whos eyes have been weeping the last 2 days, shes been out in the field etc and never had any probs before. They are also slightly inflammed and bloodshot. The discharge is yellow and quite thick.
Should i keep her fly mask on?
What should i bathe them with?
Thanks

yes to fly mask. my boy is really sensitive, he lives in and now when ever i turn him out i always have fly mask on in rain or sun. also found the wind irritates his eyes.
either bathe in salty water but if it doesn't clear up get a product called "orbenin" from your vet. it is miraculous!!!

MoM gets this. I wipe away the goo with a baby wipe and then apply tobramycin based eye drops (over the counter from the chemist). As recommended to me by an equine vet to save prescription charges. It takes a couple of days to have an effect but works well. I leave her fly mask on to prevent the flies transferring any germs between the eyes.

You can also bathe the eyes with cold tea instead of babywipe.

Shes never had anything like this before, she was turned away for 1 week untouched as shes young, and got her in yesterday and has these horrible eyes, can i bathe them with warm salt water? Can i still ride her?...wont affect her vision or anything?

Don't put salt water in her eyes! Would you like it if yours were sore? If you bathe them use cold tea. Call the vet and ask for advice. I bet he prescribes an antibiotic for an eye infection

Its the flies transfering infection.Mine had same in one eye last week I used brolene drops for 2 days and its completely clear. She has fly mask on in field but they still come into stable during the day when she has a rest. The other thing I have used in the past is golden eye ointment if its kind enough for children then its ok for horses. They can both be bought over the counter but if it persists call your vet.

When my horse had a runny eye, the vet recommended bathing it in cold tea like Chicomio suggested. Make it nice and strong - worked for mine!

If it's conjunctivitis then def a vet visit, they'll give you ointment for it (and put yellow dye in to check for eye elcers)

If it's just weeping eyes then baby wipes and Optrex!

if yellow and thick i would say there is a infection some where get the vet asap and whilst you are waiting just clean in sterile water and cotton wool!
