Interesting. Having sent a Beris bit back since it got sharp and chewed up in one use, The Horse Bit Shop say Beris have a disclaimer that these types of bits should only be used in horses with a "soft mouth".

Umm - I asked if they were going to come and inspect my horse to see if her mouth is "soft" or not but apparently they have a way of telling if it has been used outside of their guidelines.

I expected a £70 bit to last longer than an hours SJ schooling. Was I niaive?

well as neither beris or the horsebitshop have that information on their website....

this is mentioned on the leather ones.. (Excluded warranty in case of bite marks because of wrong bit choice)

Interesting - I use Nathe and Beris bits, mostly on youngsters, and never had chew marks or sharp edges and a couple of those bits are twenty years old.

That being said, if you have just bought the bit from them and are have returned it immediately I would have thought they would have been more generous.

Mine used to eat through happy mouth bits, and I'd consider him to have a soft mouth. Currently ridden in a bog standard french link with no noseband or anything else.

I use happy mouth bits and seem to remember seeing a disclaimer somewhere, I replace mine every 6 months or so

No disclaimer on the Bit Shop's page., Just this:

This bit is very useful for those horses who have a very soft mouth and don’t like complicated mouthpieces, it may also be useful for horses who back off the contact and need that extra bit of confidence in the bit. ....This mouthpiece would not be suitable if your horse leans on the bit or if they tend to take hold of the bit,.....

Instructor and I are trying various things - currently in a rubber straight bar snaffle Jumping is out current issue either head in the air or backing off, she doesnt lean or take hold, obvioulsy does manage to get her teeth on it or it wouldnt have got sharp but its not her main problem.

That's bizarre. I have a mare that grinds on bits but is happiest in a straight bar, and even though she grinds she has never chewed marks into her sprenger duo or her beris.

I can understand that they are softer so mark easier, but they shouldn't be so sharp after one hour that they need sending back imo - that sounds defective?!

One of mine did that to a nathe straight bar , the best he has ever gone of course. He goes very well in a myler low port with a barrel i think he likes to play with it which is what he did to the nathe! Nice to see a decent chain to hold it all together though
