Don't know because I've never towed with either, but please may I hijack your post and ask any Freelander owners a couple of questions?
I bought mine two months ago and a few things puzzle me.
Does your steering make a whining sort of noise going slowly round corners?
Is your steering quite stiff?
Does your car change down going down hills quite sharply? (auto)
I have taken it into my local garage who had both mechanics drive it and said it's fine, but the guarantee runs out next month and I really can't see the above is normal!
I have a horrible feeling the power steering is about to fail and it will be a £500 bill once the guarantee runs out..

Have towed with both, well tried with the freelander! 7 people, 2 dogs, trailer, 2 ponies and all the associated "stuff" and disco didn't flinch. 1 pony and trailer and freelander not happy bunny..... In saying that have a friend that tows a big horse all over the place with one and loves it, maybe I was just used to the power of the disco.

Disco over freelander everytime...... Disco has the scope to spare and the freelander will just struggle.

Its a bit like saying will my TB pull a log cart..... to be honest it will, but not for long, and not as well as a carthorse!!!

The former in both cases will not last as long as the latter

Freelanders are not really 'man' enough for towing horses about. I have a very good friend that owns a Landrover dealership whom claims that the Freelander was made for the urban person that wants to think they are in the country life as they are really a people carrier in 4x4 clothing! I would go with a discovery if that is your only choice. One of my liveries has a freelander and it is always getting stuck on our track when it has had a little rain on it! I pull her out with my Mercedes Estate!!!

Thank you guys, deffo think we have made a mistake then. I will talk to mum to see if she can switch it to the Discovery.

What a massive disappointment (sp??). Mum refuses to change to a disco (we haven't even got the freelander yet) and having read the replies, she has decided not to get a trailer at all now. I know it's safer not to tow with a freelander, but am a bit upset that we aren't getting one anymore.

Was really looking forward to having our own transport.

Sorry for wasting everyone's time, and thank you for all your help.

well no trailer is safer than towing with a freelander which would struggle to tow the skin off a rice pudding.

I know, hence why we aren't getting one.
