I just ask as a friend of mine keeps her horses on a yard but doesnt pay livery, just their costs such as bedding, feed ect
In exchange she rides and does some mucking out daily and feeds and turn outs am - she does 4 horses plus her own.

Im not sure legally how her boss stands offering that agreement

I just wondered if any of you do similar?

I used to do this on my yard. Im not sure where you would stand legally. I already had employers liability insurance in place as I had college placements on day release. It only got complicated when we hadnt defined what was expected of each other, but once we had sat down and batted it out what was expected it worked really well for both of us.

Hmm the problem is ive had sharers - given them the sane one to ride and simple things like feeding the others, the odd turn out, not charged anything for riding my horse as many times as they like and they have fecked off when its got cold / its raining.

My mate has it really cushty (jammy moo!)

Im going to offer free livery in exchange for feeding my broodmares and help around my new yard when i build it! Just in the process of buying some land.not sure what insurance would need to be in place?

I am currently getting free grass livery in exchange for riding two horses twice a week. She's a friend so it's an informal agreement between ourselves and works well.

I used to get free livery for looking after my friend's livery yard on a sunday. V V hard work but then all by livery was free (inc feed, hay and bedding).

It did get a bit strained as I want my horses to get more hay and she wouldn't let me use anymore or buy it in.

I have one livery who is here free, in exchange for 1 hours work a day in winter and 4 hours work a week in summer. that includes all her bedding and haylage plus a stable and grazing. it works perfectly and I trust her completely. Legally I am paying her, she is self employed and I have employers liability insurance.
