Discovering Polo

I groomed for a polo syndicate for a couple of seasons, just filling in when my friend was away. One day an owner phoned me and asked me to school his younster that day - so diligently I spent some time with her, walking, trotting and cantering on both reins. Next day at the match I reported back that she had gone very well - he burst out laughing and said "we don't trot polo ponies"

The last laugh was on me though because after the match he commented that she gone very well! Some days I had to spend 40 minutes just cantering a couple of ponies around a field - god, I'd do a few figure of eights and look at my watch and only 10 minutes had passed - it was a real chore

Seriously though it is quite an eye opener and I thoroughly enjoyed it although I still find some of the rules confusing (a bit like rugby!!) Putting on a polo ponies bridle is quite a conundrum with two bits, two nosebands, standing martingale and running reins - having to get 8 to 10 ponies ready for a match is quite a feat!

Polo is a really exciting game and not just for the rich and famous - we had a farmers team! I really recommend it for the bold and competitive.

I adore polo. I am off to Argentina in a 2 and a bit weeks to play solidly for 10 weeks.
I am beyond excited now!

Excuse the cliche, but it really is like a drug - the expensive though is what curtails my addiction!

I play polo - just enjoy it! If you hit your horse, do not worry - it will not be the first time it has happened to them!

Anyho, what do you want to know? Im probably not the best person on here to speak to as I don't really know that much but I can try...

Its expensive but more accesible to the average person then you might think - I pay £35 (student rate) for a good 1 1/2 hours lesson, sometimes its longer. The ponies are lovely, fantatsically well mannered and schooled and my instructor is lovely although does mock me everytime for my "eventers seat"

and despite being hopeless at coordination it really doesn't matter - I still have fun!

Also agree with Piaffe - well worth it for all the fit men
